Adventure Sports in the Himalayas
by India, Oct 21, 2008
There are four Himalayan ranges in Uttaranchal, lying one behind the other. As the Himalayas rose, they formed three successive levels; the lower Himalayas, the Higher Himalayas, the Tethys Himalayas, and the roaring snow-melt rivers that tumbled off these mountains carried down enormous quantities of soil, rocks, and gravel. All this was spread a little to the south of the Lower Himalayas. More tectonic upheavals raised these riverine deposits into the lowest range of mountains, the Siwaliks. In these four successive ranges lie some of the largest areas under ice and snow after the polar regions; the world’s most extensive network of white water rivers and most attractive treks.
