Hemet City

The lovely city of Hemet in California is a great place to visit. Steeped with history and plenty to see and do offers the traveler a vast choice. If you are planning on living or working in Hemet you are sure to be welcomed.

History of Hemet:

The first inhabitants were the Cahuilla Indian Tribe, and then in the 1800's it was owned by Mission San Luis Rey and ran as a cattle ranch. The Mexican government broke up the missions and it was awarded to a Jose Antonio Estudillo in 1842. And of course the Great Hemet Dam was built between 1891-1895 standing 122-1/2 feet high. The town had begun to flourish boasting a Hotel, a warehouse and opera house, small shops and businesses followed. There was a huge earthquake in 1899 on Christmas Day, but it did not stop the town of Hemet growing and prospering. Then a bank was built and a half-mile racetrack for the stock of horses based in Hemet. It's main glory has been the Ramona Pageant that has run almost every year since 1923 through all of the Depression and WWII which caused some minor interruptions. The people of Hemet and neighboring San Jacinto have worked together to stage this world-renowned event. Although known as a retirement area there are now quite a few youngsters coming to the area trying to get away from the rat race.

Hemet came into being in 1887, incorporated in 1910 with 992 inhabitants, it is 25.97 square miles and rises to 1,599 feet and at it's highest point it's a staggering 2,052 feet above sea level.

Things to see and do in Hemet:

Diamond valley lake and visitor centre, love lake amenities and parkland, then there is Hemet Museum that house a great display of Hemet Heritage and Artefacts, Kidzone Museum a healthy interactive fun site where kids can learn as they play. There are a vast number of museums showing life as it used to be.

Parks:

There are eight parks in Hemet and for a fee they can be hired for weddings, family picnics or party's but it would seem that it has to be for groups of over twenty five people.

Housing:

Most of the housing is on mobile home sites and rents range from $450 to $795 for a one or two-bed apartment, up to $795 - $1295 per month for a three or four bed roomed house.

Employers:

The biggest employers in Hemet has got to be The Hemet Valley Hospital followed by Hemet unified School District. The biggest Private employers are Hilton Reservations, Deutsch Engineering, Verizon California and of course Home Depot.

Haywood City

This small village in the Missouri boot hill is where small single story houses mingle with mobile homes. It is distinct because it is rated as the poorest community in four counties. Once it had the nickname of The Sands because of it's soft sand roads, also known as Hay-wood, among some of it's past names.

The people here are well below the poverty line as is their wages and their homes. Little would set it apart from the rest of the small Missouri villages, well kept gardens share with plots covered in rusty old cars.

In the 2000 Census Figures:

The average household income was a paltry $14,000 a year giving it its dubious position of being so far below the poverty line. Although it is a small improvement as in 1990 census the average income was a mere $8,453.

Haywood City Mayor:

Has stated that the reason Haywood is so far below the poverty line is because of a number of reasons, the population has been stated as 239 but he said it could in reality be slightly higher. Also the age of residents does not help, as there is a great many elderly residents that live on Social Security income. The mayor moved to Haywood City when he was a child in 1967, and has been mayor for a few years now although even he has to go to work in Aquila.

What's There?

The town boasts only two-day cares and a small candy store; it seems a shame that most people have to go to neighboring villages to work. He said the town was due for a new water and sewage system that should be finished shortly.

The Towns Topography:

The towns sandy terrain came in useful recently when there was local flooding, as the sand soaked up the moisture and left the people reasonably dry, though of course the same sand in summer can be quite a problem if you want to open your window because of the heat. Just goes to prove what is bad one day can sometimes be a blessing the next.

Jobs for men:

Drivers, sales workers and truck drivers, Cooks or food preparation assistants, Laborers, and hand material movers. Then there are agricultural workers and supervisors as well as Metal workers and plastic workers.

Jobs for Women:

Production and supervisors, Child Care workers, Nursing, psychiatric and home health aides, Food preparation assistants and cooks, Health Technicians and Technologists.

Pasadena

History:

Originally the land of Pasadena City was inhabited by the Hahamogn Tribe of Native Americans, who lived on game and vegetation, in small villages dotted along the Arroyo Seco down to South Pasadena area. Then in 1771,with the arrival of the Spaniards, who established the San Gabriel Mission. The Hahamognas converted and became labour for the mission this was the fourth mission and it grew to be very prosperous having its own orchards, vineyard and cattle.

By 1883 the town was growing and built banks and hotels. In 1886 the railway arrived this then connected Pasadena to Los Angeles and turned the town into a winter resort. Then in 1886 Pasadena became a city, this brought streetlights, paved streets and a sewer system.

The first flower covered horse and carriage went down the high street on January 1st 1890, this has become a yearly celebration known as Tournament of Roses. Huge floats are covered with flowers both fresh and dried, plants and seeds. 1902 the people of Pasadena decided to include a game in the festivities and that game was football, this did not go to well so they decided to change football for Roman Chariot Games, eventually in 1916 football was brought back.

More and more settlers came to live in Old Pasadena, and the orchards gave way to residential areas. Now however Old Pasadena is growing into one of the premier travel destinations.

Accommodation:

There are at least 17 hotels in Pasadena City so you have a vast choice to choose from, big names like The Ritz and Hilton are represented there as well as some smaller hotels.

Recreation:

You have a wealth of museums and things to see and do in Pasadena City, choose from Art centre college of design, Norton Simon Museum, Pacific Asia Museum, Descanso Gardens, Pasadena Museum of Californian Art, The Old Mill, Museum of History, The Gamble House, Historic San Gabriel Mission District, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Tournament House and Wrigley Gardens, Kidspace Children's Museum, and of course we could not miss L.A County Arboretum & Botanic Gardens.

The Future:

As the City looks towards the future it tries to balance Historic Character, a safe healthy place for all its residents to live and thrive in, and to make sure that as a city it grows but keeps the community needs as a priority. Keeping in with the past the Colorado Street Bridge designed in 1913 as a work of art, has been renovated and brought the past and future side by side.
