Have the Summer of a Lifetime

Summer camps in America are a huge business. There are many different types of camps out there - camps for rich kids, inner-city kids and special needs kids. There are religious camps (mainly Jewish and Christian), camps for the sports, camps for the arts...

No matter what your speciality area is, you could find a placement (Providing you fit the age requirements and pass certain checks). You could be spending your days coaching soccer or basketball, teaching arts, drama or music, or perhaps safeguarding a hundred American kids as a lifeguard down at the lake. Don't have a speciality area but are good with kids? You could be a general counsellor, taking the kids around to activities. There are even positions working in the office, driving, working in the kitchens or helping in the camp store.

Every year I say that this year will be my last. But every year I am drawn back again. 5 years in and it just gets better.

The day starts with getting the kids ready and off to breakfast. OK so the meals aren't always the best, but they're free - what more could you ask? The morning is taken up with activities (either teaching them or taking the kids to different ones), before lunch and then more activities in the afternoon. The evenings usually have a different program every night - some of them I've helped out with are treasure hunts, movie nights, dance-offs, "Capture the flag", hair and beauty nights (for the girls), and the camp play.

There are downsides - there is nothing worse than being woken up at 3am and having to sit up with a homesick camper, or awakening to find that a camper has thrown up all over their bed. The days are long and tiring, you get little sleep and you have to abide by all the rules and curfews. You don't get much free time at all - one day off per week. You have to live in close proximity with lots of other people.

But I can honestly say that I wouldn't change a thing. Some of the best friends I have ever made are from camp, and although you won't get rich quick (far from it!), you get to travel the USA afterwards with your new friends.

It's an amazing experience and I'd highly recommend that anyone wanting to take part definitely gets in touch with any one of the reputable agencies to find out more.

California

Hi! I'm Michael Beverly and I'm going to tell you about California. In my report I will tell you about the state bird, flower, attractions, its climate, three different animals living in the sate, and its agriculture.

State bird

California's state bird is the California Valley Quail. The California Valley Quail was picked because of its large numbers in May-August flocks and flocks of geese would go over Death Valley and hunters would wait in the valley to take out flocks and flocks over quail going through. Hunter usually flocked from 50 to 200. As hunting season came and went the numbers of the quail went down. Soon, only 1500 were left in the state soon as government officials found out they put them on the endangered list because of this. As this happened the number rose again and they were put off of the endangered list this is why the state decided to make it there state animal because of its determined comeback from extinction.

State Flower

The state flower is the Golden Poppy. IT was picked because of its bright golden color. People who saw it called it cups of gold of how bright it is. Most people said that it was like “Fields of Cups of Gold”. This made the government of California to make this the state flower.

Disney land

Disney Land is California's most popular attraction. Having so many guests hotels surround the area. Disney land has 8 kingdoms. There is the magical kingdom space kingdom animal kingdom and the adventure kingdom. California makes a lot of money off of this and is California's main attraction,

Monterey bay aquariam

Monterey bay aquariam is one of the largest aquariams in the United States ranking 2nd. Having its own supply of water coming in from the ocean. Monterey bay aquariam has the largest number of sea creatures in America and still rising.

Monterey bay aquariam is California's 2nd most inportant attraction, keeping tourists in California.

Agriculture

Some of California' most important crops is wheat and barley. Most fields are located in central Valley. Most crops are watered by the winter rains, in Minnesota we get snow but in California, all they get is rain. Oranges that are found in California are hand picked and shipped to stores around the U.S, but most aren't. Some other crops or agriculture is tomatoes, onion, pinapple, olives, apples, pears, walnuts, nuts, corn grapes, raspberries, berries, watermelon, squash. Some of California's livestock is cows, chickens, sheep, and pigs. All of these things play a different

Part in California's beauty and is helping California prosper into the number 1 state.

History

Some of California's most impressive history dated back about 15,000 years ago, during the ladst ice age. Most of the untied states and north America was covered with ice. A land bridge connect with Asia and North America. Hutners from asia crossed the landbridge or followed by it in boats as the Asian's found out that north America was a great hunting place they settled in California. Soon California had different mixed racies from natives to Asains. By1500 hundreds

California had over 100,000 Native American's. There lives began chagine when Eurpeans came. As more and more uropeans came so did missionaries trying to teach the native's cristianity., but they were not successful. Natives still preformed traditional seromony's at the missions in notrth California. So the missionaries gave up. Soon mexican's arrived in California looking for independence from mexico but were unsuccessful soon there was a governer in the state making California apart of mexico, but this didn't last for long. In 1821 mexico won its endependence from spain and California was now a truly apart of mexico.

In 1826, and American named Jedediah Smith reached California, he was a fur trapper from New York looking for new routes to set his fur traps. Smith was the first American to set foot in Californa. Over time more and more American's arrived im California to live. People learned that this land was excellent and they also learned it had a lot of gold. John Sutter owned land near sacremento. A carpenter building a mill for Sutter found gold on the land and soon everyone was rushing form all over north America. The gold rush changed California forever.

The united states had just won the war with mexico that statrted just 2 years before this event making California america's land.On Febuary 2, 1848 claiforinia became apart of the untied states. This gold rush attracted over 90,000 people and these newcomers were called forty-niners. Most pople thought you could be rich by mining this gold, a few people did make a fortune but most didn't, but still stayed in California. In 1850 california became a state in the U.S.

Soon most of the forty-niners agve up hope and needed food clothing and places to sleep so people who gave up on mingin worked in factories supplinying new miners tools for there beginning. The gold rush did not go on forever but California kept growing. In 1869, a transcontinental linked California with the eastern U.S. The railrad made it easier for people to reach California .people who helped bring abot the buiding of the rail lines became millionaires.

California's farmland also held jobs for a lot of people but not all of the state got enough rain to grow crops, so the state started irrigating land.In 1887 the first major irrigation system started bringing water to dry farmland, The projects helped California's population grow. By the end of the 1900's land was cheap.

In the early tentieth century, east coast movie makers realized that southern California was a better place to make movies. Soon Hollywood was created.

The Desert Tortuise

The desert tortuise lives in the sierra nevada's. eating and drinking the juices of the cactus and the catus meat inside.

The desert turtiose burrows deep under the sand is moist and cool. The desert tortuise has a thick shell that can Weigh over 700 pounds.

The Kit Fox

The kit fox lives in the desert looking for flowers to eat. The kit fox is the sammllest member of the dog family found in north America. The kit fox can weight at only 6 ounces, but when older can weigh as much as 12 pounds. The kit fox is a fery clever animal only coming out at night so it doesn't have to bear the heat.

The California condor

The California condor has a wingspan of 9 feet or more. This is one of the very known California bird on the endanged species list. The California condors usually live among the red wood tress but sometime stray out into the desert.

The condor has a picky menu but will eat inything if hungry enough. The California condor is so special it is being breeded at the zoo in California.

Thankyou for reading my report on California and I hoped you liked it.

San Francisco: A Lovely Place in America to Be

San Francisco is located on the tip of the San Francisco Peninsula, with the Pacific Ocean to the west, San Francisco Bay to the east and the Golden Gate to the north. The City is an international port of entry and host to one of the busiest airports in America, the San Francisco International Airport. This makes the city a favorite entry point for tourists coming from all over the world.

Aside from its convenient location especially for travelers coming from the Asia-Pacific region, you will enjoy walking the streets of San Francisco, with its soothing and cool weather that is neither too cold as in winter time in New York nor too hot as in summer time in Texas. The temperature is almost constant at about 50 degrees Fahrenheit all year round. San Francisco is rich in history having been influenced by Spanish civilization and culture for many years. This shows in the images of its landscapes and structures that have been preserved for our generation and the next.

Walk around the streets of San Francisco or take the little cable car for a short down and uphill ride to the city. Either way, you will enjoy the sights of the city. Go to Fisherman's Wharf and feel the chill of the morning fog and the windy sea.

Climate and Weather

The climate for San Francisco is comfortable. There is sunshine 60 out of every 100 possible hours.

San Francisco average annual rainfall is 20.4 inches per year
San Francisco average temperature is 56.8 degrees F.
The average low temperature is 51.1 degrees F.
The average high temperature is 62.6 degrees F.
The average winter temperature is 50 degrees F.
The average spring temperature is 56 degrees F.
The average summer temperature is 59 degrees F.
The average fall temperature is 61 degrees F.

Some of its famous tourist attractions of San Francisco are:

Golden Gate Bridge

Golden Gate Bridge was constructed in 1937. It has a total length of 8,981 feet with a longest span of 4,200 feet. It has a height of 746 feet and a width of 90 feet. The bridge was designed principally by Engineer Joseph Strauss, a University of Cincinnati graduate with the able assistance of Architect Irving Morrow and Charles Alton Ellis. Joseph Strauss led the construction team as Chief Engineer and in-charge of the overall design

and construction of the project in collaboration with the famous bridge Engineer Leon Moisseiff who acted as the principal engineer of the project. Although quite famous during his time as a major participant in the Golden Bridge Design Team, Moiseiff failed in one of his major design works, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, which collapsed when it was hit by strong windstorm.

During the construction period, Charles Alton Ellis, not being a license engineer, was fired by Strauss because of his constant dependence on Leon Moisseiff on various technical matters. Strauss claimed that he spent too much time and money sending telegrams to Moiseiff to consult him on technical matters. During his time, Ellis became knowledgeable in all aspect of engineering and structural design. He did much of the technical and theoretical work that was contributory to the completion of the bridge. Ellis was a Greek mathematician and scholar who became a professor at the University of Illinois despite his having no engineering degree. After being fired by Strauss, having been obsessed with his work and unable to find work during the depression, continued to work on the project, without pay. He turned in volumes of hand calculations that were very useful to the project.

Strauss downplayed most of the contributions of his construction and design staff, with an eye for self-promotion and posterity. More that 70 years later, the City of San Francisco finally decided to give justice to Charles Alton Ellis, for his efforts and dedication in the design of the bridge, by giving him a major credit for the job as part of the original design team.

Today the Golden Gate Bridge stands as a monument of great achievement of dedicated people who, in one way or another, have contributed immensely to the successful construction of the bridge. Although the bridge is adored as a famous engineering achievement of mankind; it has also its downsides, one of which is the continued and uncontrolled suicides that happen almost every month by those who wish to take their own lives by jumping from the bridge. It is estimated that of the more than 1,200 of those who jump off the bridge, only about 26 survived, the rest dying almost instantly.

Alcatraz

Alcatraz Island is located in the middle of San Francisco Bay area. It has an area of 7.6 hectares. The island was once used as a lighthouse, a military prison and as a Federal prison. Before it became a popular tourist destination that it is today, Alcatraz was a symbol of human cruelty in the guise of justice and social reformation. Alcatraz was a Federal Prison for hardened criminals in the middle of the 19th century. Al Capone the famous American gangster was imprisoned in Alcatraz stayed there for about four years until he was moved to another prison facility due mainly to his failing health. He was later found to have contracted syphilis. Another famous Alcatraz prisoner was Robert Stroud who spent 17 years of his life in prison until his transfer to medical facility in Springfield.

Alcatraz was finally closed as a Federal Prison in 1963 after 29 years in operation. It is now a very popular destination of tourists from all over the world. Today the island has attracted a number of birds as its habitat and breeding ground. Some of the birds and others animal species found in the island include western gulls, black crown night herons, slender salamanders and deer mice.

Fishermans' Wharf

Don't leave San Francisco without first visiting Fisherman's Wharf. It is San Francisco's most popular destination. The place is known for its historic waterfront, restaurants offering mostly sea foods, breathtaking sights of the bay and the island of Alcatraz and a host of other “must see” areas near the Wharf.

Within and nearby Fisherman's Wharf are selections of deluxe and budget hotels for the tired and weary travelers. There are available cable cars that ply the wharf route to downtown shopping area and other interesting parts of the city.

San Francisco Chinatown

The Chinatown in San Francisco is the oldest in America, having been established in the 1850's. San Francisco's Chinatown is so popular that there are sometimes more visitors in the area than in the popular Golden Gate Bridge. Most of the visitors that frequent San Francisco's Chinatown are travelers from the Asia-Pacific Region who are visiting for a couple of days as well as the local Asian residents who buy their daily food needs from the wet section of the market.

The San Francisco Chinatown is filled up with a variety of Chinese as well as Asian Food and general merchandise. There are just too many items of different kinds from all over the world sold at much lower price that those merchandise of the same kind and found in other parts of the city.

Pier 39

San Francisco's Pier 39 is a nice place to visit while in San Francisco. It is a premier bay attraction. A market place with over a hundreds stores, several restaurants and a variety of fun filled attractions for the young and the young at heart. This is also the place where you will find the world-famous Sea Lions. Also found here is the Aquarium of the Bay where you will see at close range a variety of fish species from the ocean deep.

There are other beautiful attractions that San Francisco offers including those found in downtown and in the outskirts of San Francisco

My advice to the first time visitor - please don't leave your heart in San Francisco...

Eight Budget Hostels for Your World Trip

Whether planning a weekend away or a round the world trip, finding half decent places to stay can be a tricky task especially if your funds are limited. The hostels in this article are by no means the most luxurious hostels but they are close to all of the amenities and tourist sites you wish to visit. They are affordable and the managers and owners are all extremely welcoming and accommodating. Please feel free to add your own hostels to the list.

Big Apple Hostel, New York City, USA

Conveniently located just off Times Square in Manhattan, its location really needs no more explanation. The Big Apple Hostel provides dorm rooms as well as private rooms with shared bathing facilities and is within walking distance of numerous Broadway Theaters, The Empire State Building, Central Park, and The Rockefeller Center. Kitchen facilities, a common room, and backyard barbeque area are provided and laundry services can also be arranged. A wonderful atmosphere is provided from both travelers and the fantastic management which is at your service day and night. Rates are reasonable and start at $39US.

Hostal Miralva, Madrid, Spain

Located in the heart of Madrid on C/ Valverde, a short walk from Gran Via, Hostal Miralva is a quaint little hostel which has recently been refurbished. A choice of shared and private rooms is available with the same choice being available for bathroom amenities. All rooms provide a safe, wash basin, and television. It is within walking distance of most of the important Plazas including Plaza Mayor and Plaza de Cibeles. The hostel is family run and they are extremely welcoming and very helpful. If you are looking for peace and quiet however, this may not be the place for you as restaurants located in the vicinity provide a lot of noise into the wee small hours. Prices for Hostal Miralva start at around 20 Euros for shared rooms and increase to around 30 Euros for a private.

Yellow House, Rome, Italy

Although situated at Via Argonauti 14, a little further out of the center city than other hostels, Yellow House is a 1 minute walk from the Rome underground Metro system and so easy access to all attractions is not hard. On arrival, you may think you are staying in the ghetto for all the graffiti around and it can be very hard to find once off the Metro. But fear not, it is a safe neighborhood and the graffiti is only due to the mass of students living in the area which coincidently provides a pretty good night life. The staff are young, ex-travelers who have stayed on to run the place for the owner and they provide a very real and comprehensive list of things for you to do in Rome. A choice of shared and private rooms is available and shared bathrooms are your only option. Breakfast is provided and a safe is available for important documents. Prices are cheap, starting at around 22 Euros. So if you're looking for something a little different, quirky, and with a great atmosphere, this is the place for you.

Three Little Pigs Hostel, Berlin, Germany

A former hospital building in the heart of Berlin is just the place for a fantastic, pink painted, hostel. Located right beside Potsdamer Platz at Stresemannstraße 66, the Three Little Pigs gives you access to possibly the best area in the German capital, within walking distance of the Holocaust Memorial, The Berlin Wall, and the Brandonburg Gate. As well as its own bar for socializing with other travelers, the Three Little Pigs provides both shared and private rooms, shared bathrooms, kitchen facilities, buffet breakfast, and internet access. Safes are located in most rooms and the staff are busy, but welcoming and helpful. Bike hire and free city tours are also available. Prices range from 13 Euros to around 35 Euros and are worth every cent. So if you're not freaked out by sleeping in an eerie but refurbished old hospital, this is definitely for you.

Hotel Namaskar, Delhi, India

Although not technically speaking a hostel, Hotel Namaskar provides a once in a lifetime experience for all budget travelers. Situated in the heart of Old Delhi and in the chaos of Paharganj, Hotel Namaskar is an experience to savour. Rooms are small, cell like, concrete blocks but offer a character second to none. A number of rooms don't have windows and air conditioning is non-existent. Most rooms have their own bathroom (squatter toilets and a bucket for washing), however some rooms do share and provide a Euro toilet and shower. A safe is located at the hotel foyer along with bottled water, toilet paper, and some food items for sale. The service provided by the staff is very welcoming. They will go out of their way for you. Little, quaint balconies and a wonderful view from the roof are features unique to Hotel Namaskar as is the fantastic, local coffee shop at its front door. Prices start at around a measly 600 rupees.

D & D Inn, Bangkok, Thailand

Right in the budget, young people, tourist mecca, that is Kao San Road, sits the D & D Inn. Not the most budget of the hostels you will find on this chaotic street, it provides more of a hotel feel than a hostel feel with the exception of the steady mass of 20 something's moving through its doors. A multi storied building; you will find shared or private rooms, shared and private bathrooms, as well as a rooftop swimming pool, massage facilities, a/c, and internet access. What more could you ask for? Right downstairs on the street is your link to anywhere in the city but you might spend a couple of days lapping up the shopping on Kao San first. Prices start at around 600 baht and is well worth your dosh.

Backpacker Cozy Corner Guesthouse, Singapore

Right in Singapore's bustling heart at 490 North Bridge Road, and on the second floor, you will find Backpacker Cozy Corner Guesthouse. Giving you shared and private room options, the hostel also provides free internet, laundry services, and a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere. As well as great service the Backpacker Cozy Corner Guesthouse is a short distance from some of Singapore's best spots including Orchard Place for your shopping fix, Raffles Hotel for a rather expensive Singapore Sling, and a range of inexpensive street restaurants which are fantastic. Prices start very reasonable at around 28 Singapore Dollars. A great place to stay for its location and affordability.

Only a 300m walk from downtown Queenstown on Cnr of Lake Esplanade & Brunswick Sts, Bumbles Backpackers provides travelers with a choice of dorm and private rooms, communal bathrooms, kitchen, and outdoor living areas, and sensational panoramic views of Lake Wakatipu and The Remarkables mountain range.
Fucking

Have you ever been to Fucking? I am sure that most of you think I am a fool and what a nonsense question it is. I know some of you are ready to criticize my grammar or my writing skills. I am here to change your thoughts about Fucking.

I met a chatter whose name is Ulrich in my favourite chat channel. She was very sweet and charming girl. I spoke with her for fifteen minutes. I was stunned when she told me that she lived in small village called Fucking. For a sudden, I thought that she was joking with me. She was serious and insisted on living there. I opened my Google Earth map and searched for Fucking. She was right. There has been a village called Fucking for more than 1400 years.

Fucking: A small village in Austria

Fucking is a small village in Upper Austria. The exact location is 33 kilometers north of Salzburg and near German border. It is in the municipality of Tarsdorf.

It takes it's name from a traveller whose name is Focko. As far as I know, Focko is the name of a man who travelled this village in the 6th century. Fucking means “the place of Focko's people”.

The most surprising thing in Fucking is the traffic signs at the entrance and exit of the village. Most of the people seeing this sign stop there and take the photo of it. However, this sign has been stolen many times.

Fucking is rich in oxygen and fresh air since it is situated in the forest region. Due to it's natural beauty, it is one of the beautiful picnic areas of Tarsdorf. Even though it is a very small village and it's population is only 93, it is one of the well-known villages in Austria as a natural result of media interest.

Would you like to go Fucking and be one of the Fuckers? So, this is your guide.

A great view of all the ice sheets of Greenland breaking away to form ice bergs it's also thought that this is where the iceberg that sank the Titanic originated. Some of the icebergs are half a kilometer in size and to see them up close is an amazing experience unfortunately this “iceberg factory wont be there within the next generation due to global warming so if you are planning to visit it you should visit while it is there.

Erta Ale, Ethiopia

The Trials of Flying to America

America is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world and it's not difficult to understand why. They have something for everyone. For those who demand the excitement of city life, it is impossible to beat New York City, with its barrage of neon and flurry of cabs. For those who require something a little more serene, there is the beauty of Massachusetts, Georgia, Tennessee and forty five other states. There are even miles of sandy beach areas close to major cities. For instance, Venice Beach is famous and it's in the heart of Los Angeles.

Now that I have tempted you into booking a flight to the USA immediately, its only fair that I inform you of what you will be treated to before you arrive…the flight. To demonstrate just what is in store, I would like to recount a recent flight I made to New York before catching a connection to Washington DC.

I set off for the airport early with the weather cool. The airport was blissfully quiet and after an uneventful check in, I was given "the forms". The forms provide, in my eyes, the first section of in flight entertainment! They consist of two pieces of bureaucracy. The first inquires about the value of the goods I am bringing into America and the other is the Visa Waiver. Basically, the waiver allows me to enter the US for 90 days to do whatever I want…except get a job, file for welfare, claim a pension or commit any crime (spoil sports). Furthermore, I have to swear that I'm not a terrorist, a communist, a spy, a criminal and that I've never been a Nazi. I have to wonder whether anyone has ever said "yes" to any of these questions. I'm always tempted to say "yes" in an attempt to be funny, however American immigration control…especially in New York, is famous for having large firearms and very little humour!

The flight was actually rather pleasant. The movies were poor, but it didn't matter as I was fortunately sat next to a very nice American lady. We chatted for several hours and after a while, I managed to forget that the seat in front of me had jammed my knees behind my ears and there was a baby screaming behind me.

Since the flight was a connection, I had a 90 minute layover in NY. I sat and read, listening to the permanently annoyed drawl of the New Yorkers rambling around me and boarded my flight at 5pm, heading to Washington DC. It was mercifully under booked and I had a window seat above the engine. I relaxed for nearly five minutes when the captain informed us that an emergency light had flickered to life as he was about to fire the engines and we had to pull off the runway. Suddenly, the window seat over thousands of gallons of jet fuel seemed less appealing. Still, I got a beautiful view of the clouds as we climbed through them and I was happy to be alive for the short flight. Landing in DC, I was amazed that I wasn't anally probed by customs...again, and I headed to the Metro stop, slightly disappointed that Customs had spared me my usual welcome to the US. It's not so bad when you get used to it!

So what have we learned about flying to America? Strike up a conversation with the person next to you whether they like it or not, try and enjoy the probing and never say you are a Nazi…even for a joke!

Marlton

It's beautiful, it's amazing and I think you should guess what it is, its Marlton. I have lived hear all my life. It is located in South Jersey.

We are only a half hour away from Philadelphia, two hours away from New York, and an hour away from all the wonderful beaches. We are right in the middle of everything. So what ever you are in the mood for, we've got it.

A couple of the first settlers were the English and the Welsh farmers. They came here because our town has really fertile farming soil, so they could plant there crops. Our home town was founded in 1676. It was called Evesham. It was called that because Thomas Eves came to Marlton in 1676. Also Elizabeth and William Evans were with him so they named a street after them and an elementary school too. It was a village at one time in the past. In 1845 the name Marlton came from our soil. Marl clay, it is very fertile. Since I was talking about the founders how about our events and landmarks.

One of our landmarks is the Promenade. The Promenade is an outside mall. Some of the stores are L.L. Bean, P.F. Change, and Cold Stone. And it has wonderful pond with a water fountain. For another thing our soccer field, Savage Fields is an Indian burial ground. If you dig it up you might be able to find arrowheads and artifacts like that. In addition to the soccer fields, there are many more sports like football, baseball, basketball, and hockey. It is for R.E.C, Marlton Rec Council. The Blue Barn is where you play some of the sports at. It is a really fun camp, in the summer. And George W. Bush visited there in 2004. As you can see there are a lot of sports so growing up in Marlton is really fun as a kid.

When you grow up in Marlton there are a lot of nice people and is in the top Two Hundred safest towns in New Jersey. So you don't have to worry about bad people hurting you. That why Marlton is the best town to live in.
