Eat and Sleep

Destined to be in Destin, Florida that is. If the sands on Miramar beach doesn't blow your mind then just look a little further to the bluish green waters of the Gulf. The view was magnificent. Driving down Scenic Gulf Drive will make you appreciate the beauty and wonder of nature. There are beach front properties for rent but when funds are tight then your next best option is the Embassy Suites as an affordable option. It is the only hotel located on Scenic Gulf Drive and directly across from the beach. The hotel has a gym, business center with two computers, inside center of the hotel there is a fountain, a sitting area, a restaurant and bar. The suites are nice. You have a bedroom, a separate living room, a small kitchen area with sink, microwave and refrigerator, and a decent size bathroom. Best thing about the hotel is its location, not only do you have direct access to the beach but you also have easy access to restaurants on the beach and the Silver Sands Outlet Mall. They also host a happy hour for hotel guests and full complimentary breakfast everyday. Sounds great right but now for the not so good news. My suite faced the fountain which was good but unfortunately every time they cooked in the restaurant the smell filled my room. In fairness you have to separate the bar and restaurant. Kudos to Chef Allan who operates a kitchen with five to six cooks which I believe have little experience since there were a lot of inconsistencies in the preparation of the food. During my stay I had the gumbo which was good in the cup but when I ordered a bowl had too much rice added; Filet Mignon with mash potatoes and asparagus unfortunately missed the mark completely the plate looked like a gravy bowl with some extras, lets just say not the best steak I’ve ever had; the Fisherman’s Bowl was disappointing as well. The noodles were overcooked and the entire dish lacked seasoning; but I will say is their saving grace came the last night I was there in the form of a new menu item the "Twin Lobster Tails". The lobster melted in my mouth, great flavor. I had an opportunity to speak with Chef Allen and he is aware of the comments that I am making now. I have never exposed what I do to anyone before but I really felt that this hotel restaurant deserved a chance. Thanks to Ariana our waitress she has great personality and customer service and last but definitely not least my gratitude to Jim Lorei my bartender, he was the icing on the cake. For anyone interested please visit the hotel bar between 14 February and Labor Day for a swig of Jim's Juice. Now it is up to them because I will be back. Until next time, eat well and be happy.

Guide to Your Drinking Night Out in London

Differences between restaurants, bars and pubs: Basically pubs have that old English architecture. They usually serve food in a base “ask at the bar”. If they don't, you're going to find a welcome note saying “bring your own food, we provide the beer”. While restaurants have table service, and an architecture according to the cuisine. The majority of bars only serve bar snacks and have a huge list of cocktails and wines, while in pubs you'll find beers, soft drinks, spirits with the respective mixes and some wine.

In London kids are usually allowed in pubs until 9pm, and in some bars they're not allowed. In restaurants, there's no law. Teens over 16 and under 18, accompanied by a responsible, can drink one pint of beer with a whole meal, not more than that. If not in these conditions, it's extremely prohibited to sell any kind of alcohol to under 18. Bartenders are going to ask for ID.

Pubs usually close at 11pm, 10:30 on Sundays. These hours apply for almost every pub in London. The last orders happen at 10 to 11pm, and after 11pm, you'll have half an hour to drink up. After that, please, go away because the bartenders and the manager have to clean up and go home. Thank you!

Bars close later, from 12am or around 3am.

Restaurants close at 11pm or 12pm most of the time. Only a few stay open after this time, most of them very posh and expensive. Others turn to be a night club and stop serving food after a stipulated time.

Depending on the quantity of people dining or having drinks, some of these places have license for after the time they usually close, which means that, if it's too busy, the manager can decide to let the place open until later. On the other hand, if it's too quite, like on special dates as Christmas and Easter, or that rainy winter day, they can choose to close it earlier. So, don't be surprised if your favourite pub closes before or stays open later.

Here goes a list of the most common drinks that we sell in London restaurants, bars and pubs, with tips of how to ask for them.

Beers

There are types of beers: Lager, Bitter or Ales, Wheat beer, Dark beer, Fruity and blond beer.

To know exactly what do you want to ask at the bar, you need to taste each of them, and choose your “best one”.

The most common beers are shown below:

Lagers

Dark Beer

Wheat Beer

Fruity (Strawberry Flavour)

Most Famous Bitter

Blond Beer

You can ask or be asked to serve a “shandy” which consists of half pint of lemonade and half pint of lager; or a lager top, which is the pint of lager with a dash of lemonade.

They can be on draft or keg (in the case of Ales), but also in bottles. In busy pubs and bars, what usually can happen is that there's no place in the fridges for so much sale, what can make the bottles be warm, because they were just put in the fridge before you buy. Beers on draft and keg can have the same problem, either if the glass is hot or even the draft system is not working properly. You can always argue about the temperature of your beer, but do if the bar is not busy, if it's extremely busy, you'll probably wait a long time and can be ignored by the bartenders. You can also call the manager, but, come on, a warm beer is not worthy such a fuzz.

Spirits

The most common measures are 25ml for single shot and 50ml for double. Some generous pubs have measures of 35ml and 70ml instead.

Whiskey

You can drink them with: Coke, Diet Coke, Ginger Ale, Bitter Lemon, Lemonade, Tap water, on ice, as shots, or alone in a rock's glass.

Famous whiskeys and whiskies of London entertainment places:

Vodka

It's usually asked with tonic water, slim tonic, soda and lime cordial, juices, coke and diet coke or lemonade.

There're vodkas with flavours as the Absolute Collection:

Gin & Tonic

Nothing else to say. This is the English drink. Have it with lime or cucumber.

Rum

Most common served with Coke, on the rocks or as shots.

Brandy

They can be served alone, or on the rocks. It can be asked with Coke as well, if you don't want to get drunk easily. It's better in very cold days, to warm:

Shots

Some places do a mix of spirits in a shot glass, usually 3 different ones. Thought the most common “single” shots are:

Tequila, Served with Lemon and Salt

Sambuca, Black or White

Others

Served on ice, as shots or with soft drinks:

The summer's favourite: Pimm's with fruits, mint and lemonade:

Wines

There's a huge variety of wines to sell. They're usually from Chile, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, France, Italy and Argentina.

Most common grapes:

Red: Rioja, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz/Syrah.

White: Grenache, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Rioja Blanco.

Chill On: Melbourne's First Ice Bar

Yeah imagine a bar where you go in and they give you a jacket, gloves, and scarf to wear because the temperatures are sub-zero inside. Now why would you want to do that? What if I told you it was because it was 100F outside? Would that change your mind?

“Chill On,” is Melbourne, Australia's first ice bar. The hot sizzling temperatures outside make the inside feel much more enjoyable. At $30AU per adult and $15AU per child (before 6pm kids are allowed in) the price includes gear to keep you warm while you're inside.

You're only allowed to enjoy your stay for 30 minutes and are given a buzzer when your time is up.

Your drinks are on ice, literally. The glasses you drink from are frozen ice, imagine that!

Ministry of Sound

Ministry of Sound
103 Gaunt Street
London SE1 6DP
Tel: +44 (0)870 060 0010
Fax: +44 (0)20 7403 5348
arnie@ministryofsound.com

Ministry of Sound is located near the Elephant and Castle tube station, a dodgy neighbourhood with very few decent bars nearby. Any pre-clubbing cocktails should definitely be consumed outside the vicinity of Elephant and Castle. In hindsight, I should have heeded this as an omen, but I remained optimistic.

I visited on a Friday night in hopes to experience clubbing bliss with London’s hottest movers and shakers. This popular nightclub/ global empire is world renowned for featuring some of the best DJs on the planet, so I was eager to discover first-hand what the hype was all about.

The club opens at 11:00, so I arrived at 11:30 in hopes that I would arrive before the masses but alas, the queue was already winding down the street. The security here is second-to-none. My bag and I were both thoroughly searched before I was allowed entry. A bit of a nuisance, but also reassuring as you don’t have to worry about potential armed assault from other revellers.

The cover is a bit steep at £15.00, but I figured that they had to pay for their extensive marketing somehow. Once inside, I wasn’t that impressed. The club was far smaller than I had anticipated, the staff members were unfriendly and the drink prices were ridiculous (a double Jack and Coke was $8.00)!

I wandered upstairs to get a birds-eye view of the dance floor below. I noticed that there was a VIP area to my left, so I sauntered over to the bouncer to inquire about entry. He informed me that this privilege was available for a mere £80! Talk about highway robbery. The exorbitant fee would have been justified if there were acrobats dangling from the ceiling, pole dancers on the table and champagne flowing like water, but alas none of this fabulousness was present.

Bored upstairs, I trotted back downstairs to explore the other dance room, which was featuring hard house music. The sound system was blaring almost to the point of distortion and this room was also nowhere near capacity, and therefore, was also disappointing.

My friend and I grew tired of this overpriced, over-inflated club within a few hours and decided to call it a night early, although we could have danced until 6 AM had we so desired. One would need very deep pockets and low expectations to party all night here. Sadly, the highlight of the evening for me was helping myself to the free Ministry of Sound pins at the door only so I could say “been there, done that.”

The Green Goose

This is going to be a review about a little club in the heart of Nuremberg in Bavaria, Germany! I love this club, I went there for over 2 years and I met my husband there, so what else can I say?

Ok, First the Common Informations!

The Green Goose exist since 1984.

Times

open on Fridays from 9.00p.m till 5.00 a.m and saturdays from 9.00p.m till 5.00a.m!

Where is it?

The streets name is "Vordere Sterngasse".

When you are at the main train station just walk out next to the Sparkasse and walk straight to the first street that goes right. Go right and then you can see the green door lights already!

If you come with a car parking is not a problem, because right across the street is a big "Parkhaus", where you can leave your car all night, but it costs a little bit. But if you get lucky you can find a place to park around the building at no cost.

Prices

The prices are like in every other bar or disco in Nuremberg. A beer costs around 3 euro. And there is the happy hour where every shot cost 1 euro and this happy hour is mostly from 9.00 till midnight. And you will need 3 euro to get in, but from 3.00 a.m it is free! Sometimes there are special partys like the monster ball on Halloween with Go Go Girls and special prices for drinks! And befor I forget the Green Goose sells buckets with mix drinks for about 30 euros with 5 liters of fun in them!

Who Works There?

The bartender are very nice and like to talk to the people. It is hard to not give them a tip! The bouncer are doing a very good job, as soon as someone starts being loud and aggressive they kick him or her out! It is very rare to see a fight or argument in the club. Which make a very good atmosphere in the Green Goose!

What Kind of People Go There?

You can meet every kind of people there! From a goth to a rocker to a hip hopper, many American soldiers go there, but everybody just wants to have fun and make new friends. The Green Goose is one of the bars where you don't have to be afraid to go there alone and sit on the bar for hours until someone talks to you! Most of the time it just takes about a half hour! And if you start talking to someone it is even faster! And don't worry almost everybody speaks English! So everybody is welcome and if you go there often enough you will feel like a part of a party-family!

The Music

The music is like the people that go there every music style is played! Rock, Hip hop, Alternative, soft music! And if you have a special wish you can just go up to the DJ and ask him to play your song and most of the time he does it but sometimes he doesn't get to it, but he will play it the next day or the next weekend!

Hygiene

To be honest it is not the cleanest club you will ever find, but it's not worse than any other place I know. It starts around 3.00 that the floor gets a little sticky, because some people have a hard time holding their glass up right when they get drunk, but it happens to everybody once in a while! The toilettes are ok like I said it's not worse than anywhere else. For the women: it is not so bad that you would have to stand up while you go pee so it is alright. But I'm sorry I can't tell you anything about the mens bathroom! Never been in there!

What I Think

Ok I personally love this club, because I found my husband in there! And if you want to have a good time and find some new friends or just want o talk to new people this would be the right club for you! Oh and just because you think you are to old to go there, don't worry there are some people that are older than 50 and you will see them there every weekend and they are as much fun as the younger people! So try it out you wont regret it! I promise!
