Carved from the mountains of Bhiar, Jharkhland became India's 28th state in the year 2000. It now has 26.9 million people, nearly 85% of which are tribal. Blessed with natural beauty and wildlife sanctuaries, it's a favorite among naturalists. The mineral springs of Chhotanagpur lure those seeking healthy repose. And the mines and industries of Dhanbad and Bokaro keep the state economy on an even keel.

Jharkhand is a land of colorful festivals, many of which coincide with the seasons -- Sarhul in spring; Bagta Parab in summer; and Hal Punhya in fall. The tiger reserve of Betla National Park and The Hazanbagh Wildlife Sanctuary are two of the most popular attractions here. But, the number of hotels, restaurants, and shops are scanty in the area and are mostly clustered around the city of Ranchi.

Ranchi, the state capital, basks in the beauty of splashing waterfalls, rolling hills, and a pleasant year-round climate. Indian people enjoy shopping, and it is no different here. There are numerous shopping complexes to whet the bargain-hunters interests.

Historians will find the Bihar Tribal Research Institute and Museum very informative about tribal life in the area. And for those leisurely comforts that we rarely afford ourselves unless we are on vacation, try a picnic lunch at Kanke Dam and a delightful cruise on Ranchi Lake in the center of town.

Waterfalls and sculptures adorn Ranchi's Rock Garden, a popular tourist attraction while the magnificent Sun Temple, built in the shape of a large chariot, lures pilgrims and tourists to its tranquil setting. For the younger crowd, try Jaivik Udyan Zoological Garden. And there is no age limit to who will find the beautiful Hundru, Janha, and Panch Ghagh Falls awe-inspiring.

Sleeps are comfortable at the Ranchi Ashok, a centrally-located hotel that offers a full-service restaurant, coffee shop, and all the amenities of a 3-star hotel, located 5 km. from the airport. For the ultimate in luxury, however, try Capitol Hill, the first luxury hotel in town. This establishment gives its guests an in-room minibar, internet access, and 24-hour room service. It also has a babysitter and doctor-on-call, as well as laundry facilities, an on site shopping mall, and a modern business center. Who could possibly want for more?
