Your First Trip to Hawaii?

I love it so much that I lived there for five years. Now, the mainland is my home again, but I still vacation in a beautiful spot on the map. My next trip will be with the love of my life, Deborah, which will make it paradise.

Many times I am asked by people who are going to the islands for their first trip, “What should we do there?” It is one of my favorite questions to answer. Next to Deborah, Hawaii is my favorite topic of conversation. So, here are a few suggestions for your first trip to Hawaii, specifically your first day.

If you are like me you will have to save for this vacation, but you will not have to be wealthy to enjoy my suggestions. If by chance you are wealthy, read no further, charter a jet and hire a personal guide when you get to Hawaii. In fact, if you want to take along as a personal guide…wait, I better stay here and save for my next trip. That daytime job sure puts a damper on going to Hawaii when I want to go, but eating is nice so I guess I better keep working.

For those are planning a first trip to Hawaii I highly recommend the island of Oahu. All the things you read about are on that island. You can do day trips to other islands, but your best bet is to take subsequent vacations to all of the other islands. If you can see all of them, Oahu, Hawaii with is called The Big Island, Maui, Lanai, Molokai and Kauai, you will understand how much different each one is from the others, yet how much of a part they all play in completing the paradise chain.

So, pick a flight from the United States mainland and try to arrive in Honolulu around mid-afternoon. Forget the rental car for a couple of days. Most hotels have rental car dealers in their lobbies, or at least within a very short walking distance of the hotel. Remember you are in Hawaii, a place where walking is something you will enjoy.

Most vacation packages include transportation from the airport to your hotel door. Some include transportation back to the airport, but many do not, so be sure you understand in advance if you have your return trip to the airport covered. Otherwise, make sure you save cab fare. It would not be a fun walk to the airport and the airlines will not hold the flight for you.

When you get settled in your room, make your first excursion down to the tour desk. Like the car rental counter, most hotels have a tour desk in the lobby. They normally close between 4 or 5 PM, so find that desk soon after you check in.

Book a tour for the next day; your first full day on the island and make a trip around the island. The best one is called the Grand Circle Island tour. It leaves around 5:30 in the morning and you will get back to the hotel around 4 or 5 in the afternoon. You will not spend very long at each stop, but you will learn where everything is located for later. Do not be concerned about the early morning departure.

After you travel from the mainland, the time difference will have your internal clock so confused that you will awake very early on your first morning in Hawaii. On my first trip I was sitting in Denny's at 3AM talking to everyone else who had arrived the day before and could not sleep.

The Grand Circle Island tour will pick you up from your hotel on Waikiki beach, take you through the park, past the zoo (yes Honolulu has a zoo) and out to Diamond Head. After a tour inside the crater you will travel on around to Hanauma Bay, the marine sanctuary. The view is spectacular, it is a great place to snorkel and you will see where Elvis filmed scenes from Blue Hawaii.

Continuing on around the island, you will pass by a lighthouse, feast your eyes on some of the most beautiful coastline in the world. Of course, you will see that all day long. The tour stops at the famous blow hole and while there you can gaze down at a very famous piece of beach. Calling it a stretch of beach would be “stretching” the truth. It is a tiny spot of beach known as the “From Here to Eternity” beach. If memory serves me correctly, Charlton Heston filmed a love scene on that beach.

On this side of the island you will see magnificent cliffs, dozens of waterfalls, perhaps an occasional whale or two playing offshore, pass by a beautiful temple, see where the waves are higher than thirty feet, known as the North Shore, Sunset Beach and The Pipe Line.

You will move on around the island, see the beautiful Waimea Falls where cliff divers entertain several times each day. That side of the island also hosts the trip through a rain forest and an almost biting cold drive to the top of a very famous cliff.

On your way back into the opposite end of Waikiki Beach from which you left you will see the famous Turtle Beach where you can pose for pictures with some of the oldest creatures on the island. The turtles are happy to pose with you, but do not ask them to smile. They have to draw the line somewhere.

You will also pass by Pearl Harbor which is home to the Battleship Missouri and The Arizona Memorial. You will also see Punchbowl National Cemetery, which is inside an extinct volcano. Your driver, time permitting, will also take you through the famous China Town district of Honolulu.

All in all, this makes a pretty good first full day on the island. Now sit over dinner and plan what you want to go back and see more of on your next day. Enjoy your time and remember while you are there; do not rush, you are on Hawaiian time!

Travel Destination: Singapore

Singapore is sometimes referred to a “Little Red Dot”. That's about the size of Singapore on the world map - just the size of a full-stop marked in red.

One of Singapore's main attraction is FOOD. As a tourist here, you will be bombarded by the number of shops that sell a very wide variety of Asian cuisines.

There are informal settings where you have to order you food and bring it to your table very much like ordering from a fast-food joint. Difference is that the table where you sit may quite far away from the stall itself. These stalls, it can be up to 20 different stalls, all share a common sitting area. You are spoilt for choice as you decide what to try first.

Noodles and rice are prepared in a number of different manner - fried, soup, dry, semi-dry, chilli, ketchup, clay pot, hot cast-iron plate, mini steamboat, and the list goes on.

Then if you want to pamper yourself, and not join in the hustle and bustle of things, go to a formal restaurant. It is air-conditioned and you have waiters who will take your order and then bring the food to you. Dinning at these restaurants is easily affordable.

Of course, if budget is not an issue, go for fine dinning. You will be pampered as you enjoy the wonderful service and the relaxing pace.

No matter which is your choice of dinning experience, the food tastes simply delicious. You'll be putting on weight when you visit Singapore.

It doesn't matter if you are vegetarian, you will find vegetarian food stalls easily. Singapore is a multi-racial, multi-religious mix, thus the food is catered to all people. There are also internal cuisines easily available as well.

Now you see why Singapore is a food paradise?

The other main attraction in Singapore is SHOPPING. Clothes and electronic gadgets are the top picks for tourists from US and the UK.

Next to every shop that sells food, there is one that sells clothes or other things. It's like there is a master plan that predicts that after you do your shopping, you will be hungry and thirsty, so have the food stalls nearby so that you can replenish your body with food and drink before heading for the stalls again.

Branded clothing like Asley Isham and Wykidd Song to cheap t-shirts for tourists to purchase, branded make up to branded shoes are mainly located at Orchard Road. It is a place where budget is not an issue for you. You will fall in love with these shops here. Another newly opened shopping mall is at the Changi Airport Terminal 3. This is mainly for businessmen who are in Singapore for a one day or half-day transit. It has over 100 retail and food and beverage outlets.

You have to watch out for the Great Singapore Sale (June), Singapore Fashion Festival (July) and the Christmas Light up. These sales are really worth the effort!

These are just 2 main attractions of Singapore and because it is the hottest 2 past times, there is even a shopping mall and a great number of food stalls that are open 24/7.

Speaking of hot past time, Singapore's nightlife (some of the world's best is at Clarke Quay), shopping and fine dinning is ranked top 5 in the world (reported by Country Brand Index by FutureBrand).

These are just 2 top picks why you may want to visit Singapore. Have fun!

Paradise Found

It was January 1996 in Canada and I had just finished paying for my first vacation to the Caribbean. All I had left to do? Wait until April 18 for my departure.

I had never been down south before so it wasn't as hard as it now sounds.

I was heading to Cozumel, Mexico with very little expectation for anything other than a little warm water diving and way too many cold beer, chased with even more tequila.

Although I was correct about the beer and tequila, I found something I did not expect and there seemed to be no way to turn back once I was on the course. This unexpected finding has followed me to this very day and I am certain that it will follow me for the rest of my days.

Over the next several years I took lots of trip to the Caribbean, not only to Cozumel, also to many other destinations as well, until I finally landed in the place that I now consider to be the most life changing and enchanting location on the planet.

THE DISCOVERY

San Pedro Ambergris Caye, Belize is the place my soul fells completely at peace and my mind seems to wander to several times a day all year long. This stunningly beautiful and personally haunting paradise seems to engulf the emotions and capture the mind with a simple carefree attitude. This is most obvious when you realize that everywhere on the island you go nobody, except the newly arrived tourists, are wearing shoes. I know that when you read this it seems like such a small thing, however, I can assure you the first time you have a surf & turf meal at a nice restaurant and the waitress is bare foot on the sand floor, this becomes an awakening of the spirit that I could never fully explain.

GETTING TO PARADISE

Being a SCUBA diver and traveling the tropical climates of the world for that purpose it was inevitable that I would eventually come to find San Pedro, as it's located directly on the second largest barrier reef in the entire world and was also made famous by the world renowned underwater explorer Jacques Cousteau during his exploration of the Great Blue Hole of Belize. This is one of the worlds best dive locations and has a great attraction to all who love the underwater universe. Also Madonna sang about San Pedro and Ambergris Caye in the song "La Isla Bonita” and so it would seem that destiny alone would bring me to her.

Originally it was planned for me to travel there with the same to friends that had accompanied me to Cozumel and all of the other destinations that I had been for the years since that first awakening, however, one of them was forced to cancel at the last minute due to unforeseen business problems and it was down to just Kevin and I for the trip.

I was disappointed at losing one of the group since we always had a great time together, but I was also very exited for this vacation.

And so it was that Kevin and I boarded the plane in Toronto and stopped in Houston TX as the there are no direct flights to Belize from Toronto or most other North American cities for that matter, and there we transferred to the flight that would land at Phillip S. W. Goldson International Airport (BZE) on the mainland. It would require another flight from there to get us to San Pedro and we chose Tropic Air as the means to get us there.

The flight was on a 10 seat Cessna Caravan and the pilot was very competent and professional for the 15 min commute.

OTHER OPTIONS

Although the travel method we selected was the fastest and most direct means of getting to the island it was not the most inexpensive or, for that matter, the most scenic.

If you are looking to get to Belize you will need to fly in from one of a small group of Cities in the U.S. or you can choose an option that will not only save you money, but will also provide an exiting addition to the trip for those who seek a little extra adventure.

For this you would fly into Cancun MX where you will then board a coach bus that will travel to Chetumal where you can fly or take a boat to the Island. Click here for details.

Either way the best stuff will hit you once you arrive in San Pedro.

ACCOMMODATIONS

We chose the SPINDRIFT hotel as our base of operations for the week. It was centrally located and also right on the beach and that was very appealing to us. The great thing about being located at a hotel with a pier is that all the tour operators on the Island will pick you up at the pier out front of the hotel for every excursion you plan.

Other locations on the island can be viewed here in order of price category. This will be useful as there are dozens of places to choose from and you can go as inexpensive are as high end as you would like. We chose the Spindrift for a combination of location and price. We love to stay in a hotel as opposed to a resort and this was the best we could find for the price we could afford.

I am happy to report that the staff was excellent and the accommodations were perfect for us.

GETTING AROUND

The most striking thing about transportation on Ambergris Caye is that most people walk if they are in town. If you need some sort of vehicle the most popular on Ambergris Caye is the electric golf cart. Traveler can rent these by the day, week or even the month at several locations and you can, if you like, make arrangements ahead of time for you needs. Although I would caution that time really does have a different meaning when you get here so you may want to just play it by ear and get the rental when you get there if you still want to drive around. You can check out prices here.

THINGS TO DO

If you are interested in doing more than sunning on the beach there are more options then I can count for day trips and tours ranging from local diving or crocodile watching to off island excursions to the mainland or other dive locations. There are dozens of tour operators and some times you can find better deals when you look around on the island but I would always caution that the reputable operators are the safest bet, as with anywhere else in the world.

A list of things to do will help you to find your best interests; some of my recommendations are as follows:

SCUBA diving is the #1 thing for me to do

Fishing is world class

Cave tubing on the mainland is fun for the whole family or group

There are so many more options but I always find that I am far more interested in strolling down the sand streets or along the beach for an afternoon then rushing around from one event to another.

RESTAURANTS

The cuisine on this island would be considered fine dinning in any location in Canada or the United States, and would be out of the per meal price range of the greater majority of people if they were trying to find a location to get it in their home towns. The unfortunate part for those who could afford such meals is that, I believe, there is not one place in these countries where you could even find such cuisine.

The prices are very good and the portions will fill even the heartiest appetite, additionally the service and atmosphere of every restaurant in San Pedro and the rest of Ambergris Caye would shame the very best of the worlds dinning establishments.

The atmosphere is always fun and inviting, smiles are all that you will see on the face of any server you encounter and this attitude will most definitely rub off on anyone who enters, having the effect of creating a desire to sit all night and have drink with everyone who comes in.

The service along with being friendly and warm is traditional Caribbean service. This means that meals will be served to the table on island time but you won't be aware of how long it has been because you will be having so much fun just taking it all in. As well as the best cuisine and atmosphere you will also be able to find any dish you heart desires with the only exception being, chain restaurants and fast food.

TIME TO LEAVE PARADISE

When the sad event of leaving comes around it will feel all too soon and you will be left with a strong desire to return in the (unrealistically near) future. My next visit was an eternal 7 months later and this time was with a much larger group of travelers and I can assure it will not be my last.

It is required for you to contact the island airport the day before you leave to confirm your flight back to the mainland, no doubt because so many people have changed their mind about leaving by this time, but most resorts and some hotels can make this call for you the day before.

It is with a great deal of joy that I write this review of my experience in San Pedro town Ambergris Caye, Belize because I believe that this destination needs to be given the credit it is due for the outstanding work it does to not only treat every person who is there with the utmost care and respect, but to also keep the natural beauty of the island in place for future generations to experience.

A Paradise Called Kerala

India, Land of the Green, as I call it, is an amazing place. Although I agree that some places in the country are one of the worst in the world, like New Delhi for example. India is a very fun place to go to. If there was a choice for me of going to any place in all of India, I would choose to go to Kerala. In my whole life the last trip to this country has taken my breath away. It is probably the most exhilarating, magnificent area of land you could...

This picture was taken from a festival called Onam- Taken in Kerala

Some places in India are way too crowded, but of course, it is the second most populated country in the world. The first most populated place is China. China is one of the bordering countries of India, along with Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Burma. Even though bit out of subject, China's border with India connects in the Himalayas, the famed mountain range. If we were to stay away from these dense areas of population such as Delhi, then we get to the paradise like land which anyone can enjoy. Nature follows with Greenery; you might see types of creatures that you might have little luck seeing elsewhere.

I have been to almost all of the states in India. The one that strikes me as one of the most attractive is Kerala. It is a state in the south- western part of the country. Some natives call it "Gods Own Country". This saying originated in New Zealand, but it is a fitting phrase to call this state. The climate is often a warm rain, or desirably hot and sunny. Some parts get very hot, but soon the native drinks such as the sweet coconut water and the contents inside that are later eaten.
Kerala has a great amount of biodiversity. The Zoos are just small parts of what you can see if you go out and explore the region yourself. If you have friends living in this area you can stay with you can have a blast! Here sports of interest are Cricket and "Football". Football is the Indian equivalent of Soccer. The Food is wonderful, it tingles almost all of the sensations on your tongue. Women here are taught to cook as they grow up so they can be better off when they are married. There are a lot of curries made here, like the chicken curry. One of my favorite combinations is the chicken/beef/ or even mutton curry with a type of bread made in Kerala called Porota (Po-ro-tta). This dish made me realize I had a bigger stomach than I imagined!! But my favorites might not suite your tastes, fear not! Kerala is filled with different types of dishes. Even the same named dishes can taste different from house to house. It tastes totally different from what is served in American restaurants.
Kerala has a wide array of festivals in which fun things happen. Kerala has a few religions, Hinduism is the leading religion. Christianity is another religion. Combined, both Kerala has a lot of festivals, like Christmas and Devali. Christianity in Kerala is also divided into different groups. Christians here have long sessions in church. Church services sometimes may go for as long as 7 hours sometimes. Thus, people living around a church are very devoted. Islam and other religions are also present in Kerala

All in all, the paradise of Kerala is almost too good. It is a great place to go vacation, or even if you're an animal watcher wanting to examine other species. The food is great and the people are friendly for the most part. There are a lot of middle class people living in Kerala who wants good for their children and want good for their community. Kerala is a great place with lots of impressive land.
