Liechtenstein: Prince and People

The Austrian family of Liechtenstein is documented in the 12th century. Over the next few hundred years they became close allies to the Habsburg emperors and gained land and titles in what are today the Czech Republic and Hungary. They were made Princes in 1608 and bought the counties of Schellenberg and Vaduz in 1699 and 1712. These counties were joined by imperial decree to form the Principality of Liechtenstein.

After the defeat of Napoleon who had annexed the Principality, it became a sovereign country in 1806. To save costs, the army was abolished in 1868. Liechtenstein was a natural ally of the Austrian Empire up to its dissolution in 1918. After that, Liechtenstein got closely linked to Switzerland, using the Swiss Franc as currency and entering into a customs union with Switzerland. Liechtenstein depends on the Swiss army for its defence, though there is no formal treaty to that effect.

The Prince and his family live and reside in Vaduz Castle above the capital. The Princes moved to Vaduz in 1938 permanently, before that they resided in one of their Czech or Hungarian Castles. The capital of Vaduz has 5,000 inhabitants and has an excellent art museum showing part of the princely art collection.

Liechtenstein is one of those famous tax havens. Due to the German government involving itself in Liechtenstein internal politics, a major diplomatic impasse has been reached last year. As a direct result, all art works owned by the Prince have been repatriated from Germany and loan agreements with museums cancelled. The major income in Liechtenstein is still from banks and trusts.

The language spoken is Alemannic, national language is German. It is the only country in the world with only German as a national language. Liechtenstein is a member of the United Nations. Liechtenstein has accredited only seven ambassadors worldwide; otherwise the Swiss ambassadors double in for both countries. Liechtenstein athletes on an international level usually form part of the Swiss national team in the same sport. The Football (Soccer) Club of Vaduz plays in the Swiss Superleague (Premier).

To confuse the unwary, there are several Liechtenstein connotations due to a thousand years of family history. The Castle of Liechtenstein is situated near Vienna in Austria and belongs privately to the princely family since 1806. It had been the family seat until 1300 when it was sold. There is a new Castle of Liechtenstein just near the original one built in 1820 by the princes, but this has been sold to the local community. And last but certainly not least, there is Liechtenstein Palace in Vienna, Austria, which is owned by the Prince and run as an art museum, showing the greater part of the princely collection.

Kuappi

Kuappi has been named the Smallest Restaurant in the World by the Guinness Book of World Records. Inside this 3x6 square meter restaurant in Iisalmi, Finland is one table, two chairs, a bar, a loo and a terrace with another set of table and two chairs. You can get something to eat here but if you want a real meal, you can order it from the restaurant next-door.
A specific rule must be followed for the restaurant's use: Only two guests are allowed inside. Should there be more than two, only the cleanest pair gets to sit inside while the rest should stay on the terrace, though they also allow trading places.

This little cabin became the smallest restaurant in the world in 1993. It was built in 1907 as the Finnish national railway's workmen cottage.

This location is perfectly private for recent honeymooners.

Udaivilas

Located along Lake Pichole in Udaipur, India, Udaivilas occupies 30 acres and offers 90 rooms, including some very luxurious guest suites. The pool, featured in this picture, borders the guest's rooms and measures more than 800 feet in length.

"It's a juxtaposition of old and new," Peter Silling says of Schloss Velden, the historic castle on Lake Wörth in Velden, Austria, and its new addition, whose interiors he designed. The modern, U-shaped wing, by the Viennese architectural firm Jabornegg & Pálffy, wraps around the rear of the castle, which was originally built by Bartholomäus Khevenhüller. Above: Black marble, custom-ordered for the suite, adds a mirrorlike reflection to the bath.

St. Regis Resort

St. Regis Resort Bora Bora, set on a motu, or islet, on island's coral reef, was created as "a kind of village," says the architect, Pierre Lacombe. Villas, secluded by palm groves, wind along the beaches. On its own island in the lagoon is the Royal Estate, a 13,000-square-foot villa. (April 2008)

Otahuna Lodge

A Queen Anne style house designed by architect Frederick Strouts in 1895, near Christchurch, New Zealand, is now an exclusive seven-suite hotel. Otahuna Lodge's owners, Hall Cannon and Miles Refo, recently renovated the property. They worked with a team of gardeners and consultants to revive the grounds.

Hôtel de la Paix

"I wanted to build on the history of the place," designer Bill Bensley says of the Hôtel de la Paix, in Siem Reap, Cambodia, which was reconstructed in the Art Déco style on the site of the 1950s original. A porte cochere frames the entrance. The hotels amenities trump its competitors by providing guests with a once in a lifetime spiritual visit. I don't know what that means but, it sounds amazing.

Each year, the hotel is built with "5oo tons of ice and 15,000 tons of snow" carved into one of the most fascinating hotels on earth. They keep it pretty cozy at 23° to 28° Fahrenheit. However, when you're not freezing your behind off, you can enjoy the many amenities featuring a chapel, a movie theater, an outdoor hot tub, and a bar. You're going to need a bunch of hot chocolate to get through this, I assure you.

Blue Palace is situated just 3 km away from the village of Elounda and within a few hundred meters of the fishing village of Plaka.
Best Historical Destination in Europe

Europe has many cities to offer for a vacation. So many, in fact, that even if months were available one could simply not visit them all. As a result, guidebooks usually place cities into groups and create trip itineraries based on the kinds of cities users want to visit. But for majesty and history, one city trumps them all: Vienna.

Nestled at the foot of the Alps between Eastern and Western Europe, Vienna reflects a turbulent past while boasting of a luminous future. The capital city of the once great Holy Roman Empire as well as the second capital of the notorious Nazi regime, Vienna is a city busting at the seams with history. Find below why Vienna is the place to go to enjoy history at its best.

Schönbrunn Palace

If Queen Victoria of England was called the grandmother of Europe, then Holy Roman Empress Maria Theresia of Austria is the great-grandmother. Orchestrating marriage after marriage (including the marriage of her daughter, Marie Antoinette, to French King Louis XVI), Maria Theresia not only built the Habsburg dynasty to its greatest size, but also built it's greatest palace, Schloß Schönbrunn. It was initially inspired by Versailles, but ultimately surpassed it in size (and some say even beauty!).

Kunsthistorisches Museum

Many great European cities have art museums and, in that regard, Vienna is no different. But the KHM, short for Kunsthistorisches Museum (English: Museum of Art History), part of the 21 museum complex “Museums Quartier,” houses some of the greatest works of art in the world. Staples of the collection include Breughel, Rembrandt, and Raphael, to name a few. Recent rotating collections have included the famous Arcimboldo, whose paintings often famously parodied Habsburg lifestyles.

Imperial Vaults

Near the center of Vienna is the final resting place of nearly every Habsburg. These morbidly beautiful vaults contain the sarcophagi of fallen Holy Roman Emperors, their consorts, and issue. Famous Habsburgs not buried in the vaults include Marie Antoinette (beheaded in France and buried in mass grave) and the infamous Franz Ferdinand, barred from the vaults for marrying below his social class.

Arsenal

This World War I/II museum is adjacent to Vienna's Südbahnhof, making it a little out of the way for most, but what it holds inside is well worth the trip. Along with authentic Nazi propaganda preserved from the World War II, Franz Ferdinand's car (complete with bullet holes) along with his clothing from the day he was shot are in the heart of this very Viennese museum. The trip to southern Vienna is worth it just to see these two pieces of history.

Stephansdom/St. Stephen's Cathedral

At the very center of Vienna is this beautiful masterpiece. This church is the most famous in Vienna and contains important historical references concerning Catholicism throughout the Holy Roman Empire as well as secret meeting places for the Austrian resistance during World War II. A guided tour is an absolute must, but the right guide must be chosen or the best material will be missed.

Schatzkammer

Located in a hidden part of the Hofburg Palace, the Schatzkammer holds the Holy Roman Empire's most sacred jewels. Among the collection are Charlemagne's original crown (he was the first Holy Roman Emperor), the Holy Lance, and the bed Napoleon's son was born in. Though not as visited as one might think due to its location, this is the absolute best historical destination in all of Vienna. It's also centrally located (within the Hofburg complex).

So whether you're in Vienna for business or pleasure, there's no excuse not learn about one of Europe's most important family dynasties as Vienna is Europe's Best Historical Destination.

The Most Efficient Ways to Travel in Europe

So you've thought about the trip for months, strategically planning on which cities to visit and what time of year to go. Yet while it's simple to decide how to get to Europe (you'll fly, unless you're nostalgic for early 20th century boat travel), how to get between your favorite destinations within the continent can be a difficult decisions.

First, there are the usual airline carriers. They are fast, safe, and reliable. But they are also pricey and may not always be an option. The second choice would be to go with a budget airline, but their reliability is often in question and in order to get the best deal you may have to fly on dates that do not cohere with your long anticipated travel plans. Fortunately, there are two other very good options to keep your plans afloat without sinking your wallet.

Trains

Fast, safe, and often less expensive than traditional airline carriers trains are how Europeans travel within Europe - and who better to learn from than Europeans themselves? Trains are a great option because not only do they provide an affordable way between almost all cities, but they run more frequently than planes and afford you the opportunity to see more of the countries you are visiting. In fact, an entire trip can revolve around a train trip. Perhaps you wish to retrace the path of the Orient Express. By train it's easy to get off at any stop and stay for a few hours, then hop on the next train to wherever you were going. Non-reserved tickets can be purchased for almost all trains giving the bearer an option of several months within which to travel. The flexibility and affordability are hard to beat!

So why chose anything other than trains for travel within Europe? Well, when trains are an option, you shouldn't! But sometimes towns are too small or too remote for train stations. In that case, take the bus!

Bus

Often regarded as unsafe travel in Eastern European countries, busses - minibuses included - are safe ways to travel to areas where trains don't go. Busses are ultra affordable and occasionally good alternatives to trains when traveling on a really tight budget. Busses run very frequently and offer smooth traveling - most busses are well designed for comfort, even during extended trips. In fact, many conclude on the end of their bus journey that even Polish minibuses are superior to the Greyhound services available in the United States! The one drawback to busses is that bus drivers rarely speak English and stops are usually announced only in the native language so riding prepared is a must!

For great places to travel by train or bus within Europe check out this list of undiscovered travel destinations.

Whether by plane, train, or bus, happy travels!

Fucking

Have you ever been to Fucking? I am sure that most of you think I am a fool and what a nonsense question it is. I know some of you are ready to criticize my grammar or my writing skills. I am here to change your thoughts about Fucking.

I met a chatter whose name is Ulrich in my favourite chat channel. She was very sweet and charming girl. I spoke with her for fifteen minutes. I was stunned when she told me that she lived in small village called Fucking. For a sudden, I thought that she was joking with me. She was serious and insisted on living there. I opened my Google Earth map and searched for Fucking. She was right. There has been a village called Fucking for more than 1400 years.

Fucking: A small village in Austria

Fucking is a small village in Upper Austria. The exact location is 33 kilometers north of Salzburg and near German border. It is in the municipality of Tarsdorf.

It takes it's name from a traveller whose name is Focko. As far as I know, Focko is the name of a man who travelled this village in the 6th century. Fucking means “the place of Focko's people”.

The most surprising thing in Fucking is the traffic signs at the entrance and exit of the village. Most of the people seeing this sign stop there and take the photo of it. However, this sign has been stolen many times.

Fucking is rich in oxygen and fresh air since it is situated in the forest region. Due to it's natural beauty, it is one of the beautiful picnic areas of Tarsdorf. Even though it is a very small village and it's population is only 93, it is one of the well-known villages in Austria as a natural result of media interest.

Would you like to go Fucking and be one of the Fuckers? So, this is your guide.

Apparently, Austria is home to a small village called Fucking. It was named after the founder of the town, Focko. "Ing" is an old Germanic suffix meaning people, so the meaning of Fucking in this case is "Focko's people".

Tourists are creating many problems for this village - they keep stealing the traffic signs. For such a tiny village, the expenditure on replacing the signs makes up a large portion of their budget.

In 2004, because of the problem of the stolen signs and embarrassment over the name, a vote was held to change the village's name, but most of the residents voted against this. Instead, the mayor has now decided to combat the problem in another way - by securing the signs in concrete.

The picture shows another sign in this village with a hilarious double meaning. "Bitte - nicht so schnell" is German for "Please - not so fast". Its intention is to remind drivers to slow down for the children's safety, but in this case, it has another unintended meaning.
