The Purple Onion

My boyfriend and I frequently enjoy dining out at various restaurants. Last weekend, we ate at the Purple Onion in Central City, Kentucky. As we entered the front door, we were immediately greeted by a friendly hostess who gave us the option of dining on the main level of the building; which is a very exquisite dining area, or the more casual upstairs featuring live music and a bar. We decided to eat on the main floor, to have a more quiet dinner, then have a drink or two upstairs and listen to a couple songs the band was playing.

The main floor was decorated beautifully. It was a darker room, but with the soft lights and the candles lit, it made for a romantic evening. Smoking was not allowed. The servers were very nice and respectful. Looking at the menu, there was a wide variety of foods to choose from. The prices were great as well. I expected a restaurant this nice to be a little pricy. It did not take long for our food to arrive. I ordered chicken strips, french fries, and a salad. My boyfriend ordered a steak. Everything was cooked just as we ordered, and tasted great. Throughout the meal, the servers made sure we had everything we needed, and the atmosphere remained calm and romantic.

After our meal we headed upstairs, where an unknown band was playing music. There was definitely a different atmosphere upstairs! Basketball games were on the televisions. The band was rocking out on one side of the room, and a full bar was on the other side. We sat at one of the smaller tables, listening to the band and enjoying our favorite beverages.

I was very impressed with this restaurant. It seemed suited for people of any age. The customers who did not want to be around smoking or drinking did not have to. This was a great place to eat for a special occasion, a dinner meeting, a Christmas or birthday party, or just to hang out with friends to drink a beer and watch their favorite team play sports, and still watch their budget. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Kentucky

I visited Lexington Kentucky for a week in April of 2005. It was one of the most majestic places I have ever been to and I would love to live there. My mom, my boyfriend and I decided to take a road trip as soon as time allowed, so once we all had some vacation time from school and work, we were on our way.

The first day, we traveled to Pennsylvania and stopped there for the night. We could have made it down in one day, but 16 hours of driving sounded far from inviting to all of us. I was so eager to get to our destination that I vaguely remember the trip down until we got into West Virginia the next morning. The scenery began to change and I could tell we were approaching Kentucky.

Once we arrived, we checked in to our hotel. It was a very Victorian styled country setting, which made all of us feel right at home. After checking in, we drove around a bit. It was too late to really go anywhere, but we drive to Kentucky Horse Park, the Lexington thoroughbred statues, and then back to the hotel. This left me even more excited about what was to come the next day.

Finally, dawn broke on Monday morning. We went down to the cafeteria to eat some complimentary breakfast. This is where I tried Grits for the first time and found out I loved it! After breakfast, we went down to the horse park. We watched some breed demonstrations and met famous horses in the hall of fame. Then, I walked the cross country course. This course is the only four-star eventing course in the United States, and it is where the Rolex Competition takes place every April. However we just missed it by a week.

On Tuesday, we visited the Corvette Museum and Lost River Cave in Bowling Greens. I saw some amazing cars at the Corvette Museum. Lost River Cave was also really fun. We got to go under ground in a boat. The location directly outside the cave was deemed the most romantic place in the United States to stand, so my boyfriend and I soaked up the moment.
For the rest of the week, we basically just went sightseeing. It was so beautiful. Describing Kentucky's landscape in words is virtually impossible. We went trail riding, went on a sightseeing tram ride, and stopped on the side of the road in many locations just to see the beautiful scenery.

Ever since I have visited Kentucky, I feel that my heart belongs there. I hope to live there someday, me my boyfriend, and my horse on a small ranch nestled in the hills. Hopefully this dream will come true, as it is all I ever wanted.
