Adventurous Eating: Weird Menus From Around the World

Eating in a foreign country can sometimes be a real adventure. Eating down the street can sometimes be as well. They say that it's healthiest to eat a little bit of everything but I'm not sure anyone would want to eat what some of these menus are offering.

Um, "Vegetarian chicken"? Does this mean that the chicken was a vegetarian and that means vegetarians can eat it? I think that they may have missed the point of the word vegetarian on this menu.

This menu found in Ningbo, China sounds really delicious until you get to the "Pig's fore shank with strange flavor". What exactly do they mean by strange?

This menu has "Strange flavored chicken" as a house suggestion! I'm not sure that I'm daring enough to give it a try.

How about some grilled spam? I've heard that it is a local delicacy in some Hawaiian cultures but I'm just not sure about it. I'm sure that they probably would feel the same way about eatting bison, which really isn't that uncommon where I live in Canada.

This Italian menu offers pizzas with coocked arm and hard harm. Also, a rocket. I'm not sure I really feel like eating arms and rockets tonight dear. Maybe a Hawaiian. Pizza that is, not person.

I thought that eating salads was supposed to be good for you! Salad with cancerous necks does not sound delicious or healthy to me.

This random "Will I ever see you again" message just makes me laugh. That's what they offer for sweets. I wonder if whoever it was meant for ever saw it.

Here's a picture of an edible menu by Chef Cantu of Moto Restaurant in Chicago, IL, USA. Takes "weird menus" to a whole new level. Sort of James Bondish as well...when you're done ordering, eat this message.

I thought that Winnie the Pooh liked honey. Who knew that what he really likes is a fried slice of meat? Miscellaneous meat, I guess. I hope it's not bear.

Yikes! I can't believe how cheap they're selling kids for at this restaurant. Maybe I should pick up an extra couple of them. Definitely easier than pregnancy!

This menu seems pretty normal until you read -- short ends, long ends or burnt end on bun. I'm not sure what exactly it is that they're selling the ends of... And then, of course, there's the 4 boner plate. Maybe that's what they're selling the ends of!

Visual Tour: Fethiye

In our visual tour, we were in Cappadocia yesterday. Today we are again in Turkey but driving our cars to the south of Turkey where most of the tourists prefer to visit. Everyone visiting Turkey knows Marmaris, Kusadasi, Bodrum and Fethiye more than Turkey itself. Turkey with all of these marvels is a part of heaven.

Before begining our visual tour, I would like to introduce you to Fethiye a little bit. Fethiye, one of the popular resorts of Turkey, is famous with its marina. Fethiye, administravely linked to Mugla Province, is located in Aegean region. Even though the population of inhabitants is 70000, this number drastically increases to 500000 and more in summer season. It is mostly preferred by Russian and Scandinavian tourists. The number of Germans and Frenchs are also quite high.

Written sources of scribes have denoted that its history dates back to ancient Lycian times. In the excavations, remains from this culture were found. In history books, ancient Thelmessos refers to Fethiye. The ruins of Hellenistic theatre is the most intriguing historical prosperity of the city. Findings of excavations can exhibited in Fethiye Museum. Sarcopaghi and Fethiye Tower are other historical places in Fethiye.

Belcegiz and Blue Lagoon (Oludeniz) are the most visited places of Fethiye. Blue Lagoon, described as “ the Eden that God granted to the Earth” , is ideal for sports activities like swimming, surfing and diving with its blue crytal water. This bay is also called “Paradise Bay” or “Sea of the dead” . Yachting is also other common activity there.

The layer of the water is always smooth and shines. Great combination of place and time attracts photographers at sunset time. In my opinion, it is the best place to take sunset photos.

Lets start our tour with sunset photos and move to more historical ones.

Istanbul, Amsterdam and Rome. These three beautiful city are my favourite places on the Earth. I feel lucky because I live in Turkey and see all the beauty in Istanbul. Another luck of me is that I work for an airline company and they send me various cities as a free of charge every year. I was in Rome two years ago where I made a lot of Italian friends. I visited very fantastic places and took gorgeous photos. This article is for people who wants to travel to Rome one day. Here is my favourite places that I want you to see.

Colossal construction located in the centre of Rome. It is the largest building constructed by Roman Empire and it is one of the most well-known architectural structures of Romans. This big structure is also called Flavian Amphitheatre.

Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica

Trevi Fountain

It is located in famous Trevi square. It was constructed by Nicola Salvi and Bernini between 1732 and 1762. People throw the coins on to the water and then makes wishes. It is one of the good examokes of Baroque style.

Natural Wonders of the United States

Glacier Bay, Alaska

At the end of the continent is a wild coast called Glacier Bay. The bay is a large Y shaped fjord. Mountain ranges rise to 15,000 feet. There are 10 tidewater glaciers, coastal beaches, fjords, and protected coves encompassing this breathtaking wonder.

There's such a diversity of life existing here, that it's hard to believe that only 200 years ago, all of this was capped under nearly a mile of glacial ice. A century later, it has retreated 65 miles, leaving a landscape that is changing everyday.

Grand Canyon

Carved by the Colorado River, is a gorge known as the Grand Canyon. Jokingly called by us Arizonans as the “12 second tour” (due to the accidental falls by tourists), this canyon took more than six million years to be created.

It is more than a mile deep, and 277 miles long. The canyon developed in two different direction. It first started from the west, and then from the east. The two then converged forming a canyon rich in color. So when traveling here, pay attention, and watch your step.

Sedona

Snoopy Rock

It is known for its red sandstone, and unusual formations. The city was named after the city's first postmaster's wife, Sedona Miller Schnebly. To us Arizonans, it is known as Red Rock Country.

Cathedral Rock

The type of reddish-orange layering of rock in Sedona, is found only in this vicinity. It has monoliths known as Coffeepot, Snoopy, Cathedral Rock, and Thunder Mountain.

Redwood National Park

So much diversity exists at the Redwood National and State Parks. It contains some of the most amazing forests in the world. The trees are the tallest living organisms than anywhere in the world, with trees growing as tall as 350 feet. Some of the redwoods that grow here take 400 years to mature, with some even being as old as 2,000 years.

Once upon a time the majestic redwoods began to fall victim to the lumbering trade. But eventually they became protected under the Save-the-Redwoods-League. The park is now part of the World Heritage Site as a testament to the slow growth of these beautiful trees, and as a reminder at how we need to be responsible in protecting them.

Crater Lake

Located in Oregon, Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States. It was created with the collapse of a volcano. It is nearly 2,000 feet deep, and is the seventh deepest lake in the world. The Lake was created when Mount Mazama exploded caving in on itself. Eventually over time, melting ice and rainwater would fill the crater creating what is seen today. The original volcano no longer exists, but a new one is taking shape. It is known as Wizard Island, and the mound is slowly developing into a new volcanic state.

Bryce Canyon National Park

Unlike the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon is comprised of about a dozen smaller eroded ravines. The erosion has created thousands of bizarre and unusual rock formations, ranging in a vast array of beautiful colors.

The park is named after Ebenezer Bryce a Mormon farmer, who established the region in the 1920's. The rock shapes were created by water erosion (rain and melting snow). The fragile shapes are known as hoodoos.

Yellowstone National Park

Located in Wyoming, Yellowstone became a national park in 1872. Known for its geothermal fissures, and the world famous Old Faithful, this park was the first of its kind. Yellowstone spans an area of almost 3,500 square miles.

Yellowstone Lake is centered over Yellowstone Caldera, one of the largest super volcanoes on the continent. The caldera is still an active volcano, and has erupted on many occasions over the last two million years.

Best Among the Best: The Five Greatest Things Found in the Philippines

The Largest Mall in Asia

The Mall Of Asia is located in Bay City, Pasay City, Philippines. This mall is known to be the biggest mall in the Philippines and Asia, and is also recognized as the 7th largest mall in the world considering its gross floor size, and the 3rd largest mall in terms of leasable area. It opened last May 21, 2006. It is very big that you cannot just tour around it in one day. This is owned by the SM Prime holdings which is managed by the Chinese-Filipino business tycoon Henry Sy.

The Oldest Church

The Baclayon Church is known to be the oldest Church in the Philippines, but then other historians disagree claiming that the San Agustin Church was built 25 years before the Baclayon Church was built in 1595. I have been there last summer and I can say that the Church is really beautiful. Other people argues that the latter should keep its title because it is the Church located in the place where Miguel Lopez de Legaspi first landed in the Philippines.

Numerous Festivals All Over the Country

There are many festivals in the Philippines, but the most popular would be the Cebu's Sinulog Festival in honor of the holy image of Senyor Santo Niño. It is celebrated every 3rd Sunady of the month of January. It is globally known because there are many tourists who just come to the Philippines to see the colorful parade of the festival.

Great Hospitality Of People

Filipinos are naturally friendly because they are known to be hospitable. Even if you are a foreigner they will not treat differently, Filipinos would even offer you something just to satisfy your needs. They are known in the while Southeast Asian countries for that. It could be because of the Spanish settlement for more than 3 decades that Filipinos are emotional and passionate about life in a way that seems more Latin than Asian.

Endemic Animals

Among any other countries, Philippines is one of the countries with most endemic animals in it. There are these animals that are only to b e found within the boundary of the country. With the great number of animals that are living in the country, we could really say that the Philippines has been blessed with so much natural wonders.

Batanes is the northernmost province of the Philippines. It is the smallest province in terms of land area and population. You will surely love this place. It is the best place for nature lover and people who love tranquility and serenity. This is where the Pacific Ocean merges with the South China Sea. Batanes is great for summer vacation, fishing, diving and hiking.

What makes Batanes unique?

One of the most notable facts about Batanes is its claim to a zero crime rate. Violent crime is unheard of on the islands and even petty theft is a rare occurrence. Visitors who misplaced or lost personal items are told to visit the local radio station in Batanes so that an island-wide bulletin can be aired. Locals who have found items are also likely to drop them off at the station.

Batanes' Honesty Coffee Shop, believe it or not, there is no one minding the store. Instead, a clear plastic jar is left on the counter for customers to pay for their snacks and get their own change. It works under the honesty system. Softdrinks, instant coffee, candies, biscuits, noodles, chips and other snacks are available. This is one of the many things that make Batanes a unique place to visit.

Here are some other things that make Batanes unique among other tourist destinations in the world;

Batanes is a special place. Isolated from the rest of the country, it has evolved into a truly unique destination - unlike any other island in the Philippine archipelago. Batanes is absolutely pollution-free. No traffic jams. All you can see are beauty of nature.

Unique architecture of Ivatan houses made of thick lime and stone walls with cogon grass roof has made it a favorite attraction to visitors. They were built this way to endure typhoons that frequently hit the area.

Batanes is made up mostly of hills and mountains. Lush greenery tapers off to give way to stretches of sandy beaches and rocky shorelines.

Batanes is suitable to hardy, outdoor types who enjoy hiking over hills and vales, swimming and discovering a unique local culture, rather than indulging in material pleasures.

The people are different - a brave and skillful race of hardy, inscrutable survivors. They are notable for their honesty, industry and hospitability.

The topography coupled with its constant rainfall and strong winds have created a destination that is truly one-of-a-kind. The weather is different. In fact, the weather is the king.

The boats, the language, the crafts, and the wine (called palek-from sugarcane) - they are all different.

Aside from the festive town fiestas, free and natural beaches, trekking adventures, bird watching in October or fishing in summer, there are a lot of other local attractions worth visiting such as:

The undisturbed and unspoiled Sabtang Island, with its sandy beaches and rugged country trails make it a secret paradise.

Historic Churches in every town which were over 200 years old made of massive mixture of lime and stone.

Radar tukon in Basco rests on the hilltop overlooking a 360 degree view of the cliffs, hills and the seas around the island.

And the Interior road, a trail of unending countryside panoramic views, rock formations and rolling terrain

Other places of interest in Batanes include; House of Dakay (1887) a UNESCO heritage building; Mt. Iraya - A 1008-meter mountain on Batan Island; Mahatao View Deck; Burial Caves - Pre-historic burial caves in the town of Itbayat; Sumhao Wind Power Plant; Nakaboang Beach, Ark & Cave; Songsong Ruins; Beaches - Chadpidan Beach, White Beach; and Payaman - known as "Marlboro Country", a pasture overlooking farm fields & the Pacific Ocean.

The best time to visit Batanes is from February to July.

Ginataang kuhol (Snail cooked in coconut milk)

There are varieties of snails being cooked and eaten in the Philippines. Only two are being shown here. Ginataang kuhol or suso is sautéed with garlic, onion, ginger and pepper plus coconut milk. There are also other ways of cooking these snails.

A Golden snail (kuhol)/ Ginatang Kuhol

This kind of snail (suso) is sautéed w/ fresh tomato. I cooked and photographed this one myself.

Papaitan (came from the Filipino root word, “pait” which means “bitter”)

This is consists mostly of goat or cow innards. This is sautéed in garlic and onions (ginger is optional). The bitter taste is from the bile or stocked produced from the stomach of the goat or cow. This is also a delicacy for us but exotic for others.

A pinapaitan

Dinuguan (dog meat or pork blood stew)

It is a common delicacy here in the Philippines like the balut. Yes, vampires and mortals alike may find this viand so tempting. It is a combination of pork/dog meat and innards stewed to perfection with pork blood (“dinuguan” means “bloodied”). It is best eaten with a puto (steamed rice cake). When it is cooked dried it is called tinumis or pinaputok. A variant of dinuguan cooked by the Ibanags in the Northern part of the country is what I considered exotic, the cooked dinuguan is added up with fresh blood before serving it. Bizarre isn't it?

Tinumis / Dinuguan w/ puto

Balut

This is a 2 to 3 week-old hatched duck egg (with embryo), which is hard- boiled. It can be spiced up with salt, vinegar w/ diced garlic and onion, and chili.

A balut

Jumping salad (Shrimps jumping salad)

It is called jumping salad because the shrimps are prepared alive and eaten alive. Spiced up with citrus juice or grated unripe mango, salt and msg. as easy as that.

Prito o ginisang tateg (fried/sautéed huge worms)

This one is what I consider the most bizarre of them all. These worms can be found on rotten trees or rotten stack of rice hays. They are usually cooked by deep frying it. It can also be sautéed with garlic, onion, tomato and pepper. I haven't tasted this one yet.

People are Quite Odd: 10 of the Strangest World Records

There are some pretty crazy people in the world ... many are willing to do just about anything for attention. Here are some of the most bizarre attention grabbers on the planet and out of this world.

Most Tattooed Person

This one is very impressive, seeing how getting a tattoo of a dot is very painful. This record was set by Lucky Diamond Rich who has spent 1000 hours of his life getting tattoos that cover his entire body.

Most Books Typed Backwards

This one seems very tricky ... I still don't know where anyone would get the idea to do this. It's amazing, actually, seeing as he did it entirely by memory. Michele Santelia of Campobasso, Italy typed 58 books backwards without looking at the screen and with a blank keyboard. He typed books in their original language ... ranging from The Odyssey to The Book of the Dead.

Most Rattle Snakes To Be in A Bathtub With

This one I've heard of, but I still think these guys are crazy, in a good way. In 1999 Jackie Bibby and Rosie Reynolds-McCasland sat in different bathtubs both with 75 rattle snakes in Los Angeles California.

Most Live Rattlesnakes Held in Mouth

One of the same guys as the last record, still insane, still awesome. In 2006, Jackie Bibby held 10 Rattle Snakes in his mouth for 10 seconds. In New York City, this is one of many Jackie Bibby Records.

Car Window Opened by a Dog the Fastest

I think this record is cool because if I had a dog that could open a window for me, my ultimate dream would come true. Striker, a border collie owned by Francis V. Gadassi from Hungary, set this record.

Largest Collection of Penguins

Most people have collections. Like me they, keep you from going crazy I collect human hair. Just kidding, but this collection is very impressive. It consist of 2,520 different penguins. And belongs to Brigit Berends.

Largest Gathering of People Dressed As Gorillas

I can't really type this with a straight face because it is so hilarious of a concept. This gathering consisted of 637 people dressed as gorillas. It was organized to raise money for the
Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund.

Longest Title of a Book

This one is great. As an active reader, I find this one very entertaining. It was written by Davide Ciliberte of Italy.

Fastest Modeling of a Balloon Dog

I one reason I find this interesting is because it brings back horrible, horrible memories. This record is amazing, seeing as if most people even attempted to create a balloon dog it would blow up in their face, me included.

Fastest Time to Run Across 100 Meters of Ice

I really don't know where anyone would get the idea to do this, but it is an amazing feat nonetheless. This was beaten in 2006 by, Nico Surings from Netherlands, in 17.35 seconds.

The anti-Soviet room has parody posters and references to liberalization, sex and drugs. The anti-Soviet offers bourgeois dishes such as fondue and crab. Now, the KGB is better known as one of the best New York literary venue establishments, with reading sessions almost daily where a great get-together venue has established for struggling writers to share their work and ideas - but even more importantly, to get noticed.

Just above the secret hide-out, was an athletic field or type of stadium as a facade.

This cafe is located near the once Khmer Rouge interrogation and torture chamber (better known as the Killing Fields) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The Khmer Rouge Cafe is meant to remind the public of the genocide in 1975-1979 during Pol Pot's era. The waitresses are dressed in the local guerrillas black uniforms. Most visitors may not be able to even stomach the food as the "Khmer Rouge detainees set menu" includes rice water, corn mixed with water and leaves, dove eggs and tea, which costs $6 per set.

7. Hitler's Cross

In 2006, a controversial Hitler themed restaurant was opened at Kaghar in Mumbai, India. The name actually refers to the symbol of the Nazi regime, "swastika" which was also the sacred symbol in the Aryan civilization. Although the restaurant's owner claimed that his restaurant has no intention of promoting Hitler and his Nazi party, Hitler's portrait was displayed at the entrance of the restaurant and the interior of the restaurants are decorated in the Nazi party colors - white, red and black.

However, after much public criticism, the restaurant was renamed the "Cross Cafe", the swastika symbol was replaced with multicolored bands, and Hitler's name as well as his portrait was taken down at last.
