Travel Review: Lvov, Ukraine

Lvov is one of the most mystifying cities within Ukraine, blessed with massive European architecture, monuments, museums, parks and churches. With a current population of approximately 800.000, Lvov was a part of Poland, Austro-Hungarian Empire, Russian empire and USSR once upon a time but since 1991 it is an independent State.

Streets are lined with busy kiosks, architectural landscapes, gothic century cathedrals, and opera theatres. The Armenian and Orthodox churches manifest the cities ambience and depict a potently evolving history. No doubt the city is officially included to the UNESCO List of World Monuments of Architecture. Lvov has always been a significant educational portal housing the famous Ivan Franko National University where I learnt to speak, read and write Russian from amiable tutors.

Lvov has one small welcoming international airport (UKLL/LWO) located a mere 6Km from the Cities hub. I personally recommend taking the Railway as it has all the comforts of traveling, tourists die for. I recall a modestly priced journey from Lvov to the Ukraine's Capital Kiev. I was immediately impressed by their railway cabins, which were amply stacked with soaps and towels, fresh smelling, scrupulously white and cozy pillows, blankets mattresses. An attendant checked on us every 2 hours to offer tea, biscuits and other local desserts.

The most comfortable hotels are located in the heart of the city and tourists are offered cheaper initiatives such as renting an apartment. The "Downtown Lvov Apartments" are only meters away from theatres, cathedrals, museums, restaurants cafes and shops. A lot of ancient fortification and religious buildings are situated around the city- Olesko castle and Pidgirtsi castle. Not far from the city itself there are balneology centers in Truskavets, Morshyn and Skhidnytsia and ski-centers in Slavsko and Tysovets. The cities inhabitants are friendly and warm towards tourists and often invite Polish tourists as till date the city houses Polish architecture. Tourists are advised to buy mineral water and speak in Russian, Ukrainian, German or even English dialect.

The market place is havoc with fresh supplies arriving from the suburbs and rural plantations in the day time. Women are often seen employed as compared to men who would rather play dominoes within the city's central square. Ukrainian women are well known throughout the world for the arduous jobs and active spirit. You will see them tediously working in restaurants, medical centers, kiosks, bars, postal houses, hostels, messes and universities. Streets are also lined with young talented artists who make paintings out of charcoal and sketch portraits for passer-bys.

A famous club known as "Split" is one of the most privileged and prestigious entertainment zones consisting of casinos, restaurants, pubs and show-bars. Busses, railways, Tramps and Taxis run throughout the day and a tramp is the most convenient and cheapest mode of transport within the city preferred by university students and employees.

A personal favorite local starter is the Russian salad and "Smitana", a drink made of rich curd-pure in quality and excellent in taste. The salad is served in various Restaurants such as "Kapriz" and "Darwin" and the "Smitana" can be purchased locally from Kiosks or the Market place. I have till date not relished upon the original salad elsewhere. Many restaurants within the city offer smoking, non-smoking areas, special family room for larger families and a warm but busy ambience.

The climate in Ukraine is temperate continental, mainly characterized by plentiful precipitation and cloudiness in winter and fall where winters are usually long and cold. Summers are short but can be pretty hot. In winter the kiosks close by 5pm as it becomes really dark and the streets become deserted. At this time it is advisable not to venture off alone and to take a taxi while traveling within the city. My overall stay for 6 months in the city only warned me about staying out doors at nights as it can be dangerous for tourists and students to wander off alone. The cities inhabitants usually retire to bed early and begin the day as soon as the cock crows. Being a winter-bird myself, I would travel to this city often during December and January. Summer-birds are advised to wear carry minimal clothing as it can become very hot and sweaty during summer. The city has forestry reserves and various natural resorts; you will be thrilled by the beauty and natural forestry throughout the city.

Before you go do not forget to learn some basics in Russian language. Some phrases like "Thank you", translated as "Cpaciba", "Excuse me", translated as "Pajalysta", "Do you speak English?" translated as "we gavariti pa angleesski?", and a handy Phrase book will help you move about the city more conveniently. Till then "La re vedere" (translated as good-bye).

Egypt is a place of great mystery. It holds a corner of my heart and I have had many dreams of this place and of my past lives in places such as Cairo. The Capitol of Egypt “Cairo” is a city that never sleeps.

It is said, the night has a thousand eyes. I thought it would be nice to share with you the readers some of the landmarks of Egypt; it has many places and things to see.

One of my favorite landmarks is the Tower in the city of Cairo. You can see as far as the eyes will allow and pretty well in all directions. It is a freestanding tower, (187 meter) or (617 feet) high.

This concrete structure is located in the Zamalex district on Gezira Island in the River Nile.

You can see by looking at the picture that it is a cool tower.

If you are ever in Egypt, you will want to visit some of its Universities, as they are a site to see. Cairo is considered the hub of education for the completely Arab world.

The picture below is of the Cairo University.

You may also want to visit the Great Pyramids of Egypt; take in the history of them and pass it along to your children. They are really awesome and very rich with information concerning the culture and history. Students if planning on a field trip to these places would come away with many memories.

Another of my absolute favorite sites is the Great Sphinx. If you are ever in Egypt, it is one of your top to do list. You will not regret it.

You may want to take a tour deep inside one or more of the Great Pyramids also. You can learn a lot of ancient history.

This is a great shot of the inside of one.

The Great Pyramids are also considered the world's oldest mysteries. There is still much history buried here and one day soon, I am sure we will hear of many new finds beneath the sands of Egypt.

You may also consider visiting some of the tombs that belonged to the Kings.

King Tut the ruler of Egypt tomb is shown above.

This is the face of King Tut and it is truly amazing. I hope you have enjoyed some of the wonders of Egypt with me. I loved writing about them.

However, one of my friends changed my mind when he told me about Sweden. He had never thought to live in Sweden until he was accepted by a Swedish University for master degree. I contacted him by phone and Internet and gathered information about Sweden. He biased me to move Sweden.

I have searched and surveyed about moving to Sweden so far.I've asked Swedish people about Sweden, life in Sweden and life conditions in Sweden. These are the results of my quick survey:

There is no war or possibility of war in Sweden. All Swedish people live in peace in their land.

There is a big opportunity for taking good education especially in engineering and natural sciences.
Things to Do in Glasgow

Americans seldom consider Glasgow when they visit the United Kingdom. They flock to London, and adjacent countryside areas; the quaint and the cosmopolitan United Kingdom. Some venture North to Scotland and its colorful and historic capital, Edinburgh. They tend to shy away from the big, industrial metropolis forty miles to the West. This is a pity, because visitors who don't sample the delights of Glasgow are missing one of the most vibrant and attractive cities in Europe.

Glasgow is not the gritty, working-class metropolis of legend. It never was, and there are many attractions and things to do in this Mecca of the North.

Glasgow, in fact, is one of the UK's most visited cities. It hosted the Great Exhibitions of 1888 and 1901, became an industrial powerhouse in the twentieth century, and has returned as a place of culture since the Second World War. The city hosted the popular Glasgow Garden Festival in 1988, and was designated European City of Culture in 1990. In 1996, it hosted a spectacular Festival of Visual Arts. More than two million tourists visit from within the UK and from Europe and more distant areas every year.

The Old and the New

Glasgow is home to many of Scotland's principal performing arts organisations:

The Scottish Opera

The Scottish Ballet

The Royal Scottish National Orchestra

The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra

The National Youth Orchestra of Scotland

The Citizen's Theatre

In addition, there are many new small and "experimental" venues and lively pubs and clubs, especially clustering around the Glasgow centers of learning. Since the city's first university was established in 1451, Glasgow has been hailed as a powerful seat of learning. Lord Kelvin, Adam Smith and James Watt are just some of history's great thinkers associated with the city's academic past. Today's educational establishments include:

The University of Glasgow

Strathclyde University

Glasgow Caledonian University

The Royal Scottish Academy of Music

Glasgow School of Art

College of Commerce

College of Building and Printing

College of Food Technology

Glasgow Hotel School (Strathclyde University)

Visitors are often surprised to learn that Glasgow has the largest retail sector outside of London. Residents and visitors from around the UK and overseas are drawn to the city's expanding shopping outlets, which include:

Shopping malls like the chic and trendy Princes Square, the enormous St Enoch Centre, Sauchiehall Street Centre, Parkhead Forge, the historical Argyle Arcade, and the Buchanan Galleries (opened 1999)

The main pedestrian shopping thoroughfares of Sauchiehall Street, Buchanan Street and Argyle Street. .

The unique and colorful Barras weekend street market

The smaller, character filled outlets of the city's bohemian West End

A wide range of top class cafés, restaurants, pubs and wine bars

The city of Glasgow is proud of its tough industrial past and current vibrant economy. The city employs City Centre Representatives to help shoppers and visitors around the city, and a comprehensive City Watch close-circuit TV scheme keeping a watchful eye on the streets.

Journey to Israel

I just graduated college, journalism major, and it's been my life long dream to go to israel. I have a job lined up,and I will start in three months. So here comes the rub, how to pay for the trip. I used up every penny I had to get through schooL. I have to do something. But i'm going if I have to walk(youknow what I mean). So I know Ma and Dad are sick of me, but maybe they are in a good mood. Um Ma, can you help me? Ok, Ma is on board, but not to pay for the whole thing.

All she gave me was $200 she was saving for a pair of Manolo Blahniks , what ever that is, and she says she will talk to Dad. Next day is Saturday, and I hopefully go out to the garage where Dad is working on his project, cabinets for the den. Dad, did mom get a chance to talk to you? Yes, she says you want to go on vacation to Israel.. Yes, and I hope you can get enough money to go. Well, can you be of any help? Yes I decided to give you $200, I believe thats the amount your mother gave you. Yes, but I was hoping I would get more from you. No, you want to go, you figure it out. You're an adult now.

Being an adult sucks at times. and this is definably one of those times. So being a journalist major, I wondered if I could write an ad that would get people to hire me for well paying jobs. After all I have three months, if I work two months I might get enough to pay for the trip. So I wrote my most heartfelt plea in the jobs wanted section. and it worked! One lady called me. She needed a dog walker, I love dogs, ok then. She had a pit bull with attitude,"Pugsley". He was huge, he was strong too.

.Luckily, he liked me. I had several close calls, but managed to keep him off any people, or other dogs. She paid me well, but that was still not going to get me to Israel. Then a guy called. His elevator operator was going on vacation, would I like to fill in for a month? Sure. So there I was, up and down, up and down, down and up. I ran the two blocks to Mrs. Meyers house, to walk Pugsley. It took up my whole break time, and half of my lunch. The elevator operators job, you would think was easy, and it was. It was also frustrating.

Why is it, people get in an elevator, and don't know where they want to go? What floor, I'd say, and they would start to search for the letter, or the little piece of paper that the office number is written on. Why don't they do that before they got into the elevator? I' ve never worked in a restaurant, but they get good tips, don't they? I applied for a part time job waiting tables. I went for the interview, while on my lunch hour. I didn't want to wear my uniform, so I brought a nice outfit in my backpack with my lunch.

So , he said he would give me a try. Come tomorrow at 6:00pm. So then, I get off the elevator job at 5:00 pm, I will go get Pugsley and walk him, and come straight from work to the restaurant. Mrs, Meyers suggested I could take a shower and change at her house, and I did. So this was my life for a month. The elevator operator came back from vacation, but the other guy left, so I continued for another month. When it was time to leave the elevator operators job, they gave me a cake, and were sorry to see me go. I found Jeff, he is a veterinary student, and he will walk Pugsley.

I found a replacement for my waitress job too. Mom! Turns out she used to waitress, and was feeling like she needed to get out of the house. Dad was all for it, and she can make some of her own spending money, he said. I had a month left, before I started my permanent job, so I went down to the travel agent with Mom and Dad, when we got there the agent shook their hands like he knew them . Turns out he did. My mother, and my father had purchased a ticket for me over a month ago. I was so proud of you Dad said, how you were really determined to realize your dream .I couldn't say anything, I just cried. Everyone should have parents like you two. No, every one should have a daughter like you , Dad said. It's really happening,

I'm on my way to Israel!

Florida

Where can you find Walt Disney World, the oldest European settlement in North America, America's launch pad for space shuttles, and the beach...all in one day? If you guessed Florida then you are right

Florida was founded in 1513 by Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León, who called it “Feast of Flowers”, also known as Florida.

Florida was later made part of the United Sates of America in 1845. Florida's climate is very warm, making it a great place to travel to from up north to get some of the warm weather. Florida is also a great place to travel to because of some of the great theme parks such as Disney World, Sea World, and Bush Gardens.

Another reason Florida is a great travel destination is because of its beautiful coastline stretching 1,197 miles on the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf coast. Because of the beaches there are tons more of recreational activities to do such as surfing, sailing, snorkeling, boogie-boarding, boating, and skim boarding.

Another great tourist spot is the Florida Keys because of the variety of wildlife and fish, the great weather, and the crystal clear water that surrounds the islands in the Caribbean Sea. Some of the large cities in Florida are Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Tampa; the largest of them all is the city of Miami witch is home to 3,876,380 people.

The capital of Florida is Tallahassee. The government of Florida consists of a Governor and a cabinet consisting of Attorney General, Chief Financial Officer, and Commissioner of Agriculture. The Governor of Florida is currently Jeb Bush, our president's brother. Because of the many tourist venues in Florida it is one of the most traveled to states in all of America. It is also ranked number four in the U.S. for population which was 16 million people in 2000.

Florida is well known for its colleges. Some of them are: The University of Miami, The University of South Florida, Florida State University, and University of Florida. The two biggest are Florida and Florida State.

Now to some of Florida's geography and resources - the geography of Florida is mostly flat land with occasional hills, lakes, rivers, and valleys. Florida's total land area is 58,560 square miles which puts Florida in 22nd rank for land in the United States. Florida's length north to south is 447 miles stretching from the St. Marys River to Key West. The width of Florida east to west is 361 miles stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Perdido River. The highest natural point of Florida is 345 feet. Florida also has a lot of coastline going 1,197 miles on the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf coast.

Although Florida is one of the most popular destinations for tourists in all of America, I think that is also one of the best states to live in.
