Guide to Wymondham, Norfolk

Wymondham (pronounced “Windum”) is a small, historic market town situated about 8 miles south-west of Norwich, in the East of England. With a population of about 14000 people, a selection of shops and banks and excellent schools, it is a popular place to live.

The town dates from Anglo-Saxon times but much of it was destroyed in a fire in 1615. The Green Dragon pub was one of the few buildings to survive the fire and still offers a fine selection of real ales and home-made meals.

The Abbey is perhaps the most famous landmark in the town, its two towers visible from miles around. Originally built in 1107 to serve both the town's parishioners and a group of Benedictine monks, it was the scene of many quarrels, including the building of the towers, one (the larger western one) by the town's people and the other by the monks. The dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII resulted in the destruction of all the abbey's domestic buildings and part of the church, leaving on tower a shell and the rest of the church to be used as Parish Church.

The wooden-stilted Market-Cross and the Bridewell museum are other historic buildings of note.

Wymondham is not just a historic town, however, it also has a vibrant present and an exciting future.

The town is next to the A11 which is the main trunk road out of Norfolk and has almost been completely dualled. The town railway station is on the main line from Norwich to Cambridge and there are regular buses and coaches both into Norwich and out to Cambridge, Stansted Airport and London.

The quality of the schools in the town and surrounding area causes many to seek to move to the town. Two infant schools and a junior school which have all been classed by Ofsted as good or excellent feed into a high school with a large sixth form which consistently ranks among the top comprehensive schools in the country in both GCSE and A-level results. There is also a state-funded boarding school nearby which takes day-pupils and consistently achieves good results.

Several recent housing developments have expanded the type of housing available and there is also a growing commercial estate on the edge of town around the new headquarters of the Norfolk Constabulary, including a Waitrose Supermarket and a Focus DIY store. The town centre is a vibrant hub, with a popular market every Friday, banks, solicitors, electrical retailers, cafés and many other establishments. A new library has just been built which provides and excellent facility in a town centre location.

A busy social scene includes the heritage society, youth orchestra, dramatic society, football and rugby clubs and a cinema society at the old Regal cinema showing films on the original 1930's projection equipment.

10 Tips for Today's Travelers

It's sad to say that whether you are blissfully going on a vacation, or are a worn-down road warrior you have to spend time and energy on keeping yourself safe. But it's the truth. You are responsible for protecting yourself and your belongings while on a trip. Here are ten easy tips for doing just that.

Ask for a room in the middle of a hallway. It's harder for strangers to explain why they are hanging out in a hallway than near a stairwell or elevator.

Use the peep-hole in your door even if the person on the other side announces “housekeeping” or “room service”

Separate your room card/key from the folder shortly after arriving at your room. That way if someone takes your purse or wallet, they may know what hotel you're in, but not the room.

Stash your room key in your shoe or between the folds of a towel BEFORE leaving your room for the pool or exercise area

Pause outside the elevator if you and another person get off alone. Let them head for their room first so they are not following you to yours.

If you travel with a laptop secure it whenever you leave the room. Some suggestions are to invest in a cable lock, place the laptop on the closet shelf and cable it to the closet pole; use the in-room safe for the laptop; stash it between the mattress and box spring in the middle of the bed.

Don't leave jewelry scattered. Have a jewelry case and either use the in-room safe, hide it in the folds of your underwear in a drawer, or place it under the mattress toward the middle of the bed.

Do NOT accept taxi or car service rides from anyone inside the airport unless you have made prior arrangements. Most large airports have rules about people soliciting for riders inside the airport.

Use main entrances to the hotel after dark. If you use a secured door, avoid the door if someone is standing around it.

Be aware of your luggage at airports, train stations, bus depots, and taxi stands. Just because it is next to you doesn't mean someone won't swipe it while you're distracted.

Cebu City: A New Haven for Expats

If you wish to explore the Asia-Pacific region to settle down or to just stay for a while to enjoy, include Cebu in your list of places to consider. You will be surprised to find out that Cebu is now teeming with expatriates from all over the world.

Cebu is located in Southern Philippines. It is one of the very historic places in the country. It was in Cebu where Spanish maritime warrior Ferdinand Magellan conquered the Philippines in 1521 but was later killed after a fierce battle with Lapu-Lapu, a tribal Filipino warrior, in the historic Battle of Mactan. More than 40 years later, another Spanish conquistador Miguel Lopez de Legaspi sailed to Cebu with about 500 armed men and with Agustinian and Franciscan Friars, succeeded in colonizing the islands. His religious entourage would later succeed in spreading the Christian faith into the mainstream of the Philippine society; eventually making the Philippines known today as the bastion of Christianity in Asia.

Cebu City Today: A Vibrant Metropolis

Today, Cebu City is teeming with Expatriates from all over the world. Notably, the City is the favorite place of Australians, Europeans, Americans, Chinese, Japanese and Koreans. They are lured into the City for its relative peace and order situation, a vibrant economy, topnotch tourism attractions, affordable hotel and housing accommodations, exciting nightlife and entertainment and most of all, for its hospitable and English- speaking population. Most of these expatriates have been living in Cebu for many years. Some of them are retirees who enjoy life in Cebu with their meager pension money. A single guy who gets a US$1,000.00 monthly pension can “live like a king” in Cebu. With his pension money, he can afford to hire a personal driver, a house maid, a decent housing accommodation and still save extra money for food and other personal needs.

Some of the world class hotels that operate in the city include Marriot, Marco Polo, Shangri-La, Hilton, Parklane, Waterfront, Plantation Bay, Maribago, Days Inn, among others. There are smaller and budget hotels that offer first class accommodations at affordable rates.

Quezon City: Philippine's Richest City

Quezon City is not only the largest City in Metro Manila, it is also the richest in the country and home to popular institutions like the Batasang Pambansa (National Legislature), the University of the Philippines, the world-famous Araneta Coliseum, where Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier fought for the heavyweight championship of the world, dubbed as “Thrilla in Manila” in 1975, People Power Monument, Camps Aguinaldo and Crame, Ateneo de Manila University, among others.

This city got its name from Manuel L. Quezon, the first President of the Philippine Commonwealth. Quezon City has a land area of about 160 square kilometers which is about 25% of Metro Manila in terms of land area. It is located in the heartland of Metro Manila, with a population of about 2.7 million people. It has four (4) congressional districts represented each by a congressman or a member of the House of Representatives. The Mayor is head of the City and the Vice Mayor is the Presiding Officer of the City Council. The Council is made up of elected Councilors representing their Districts.

The local government of Quezon City is headed by Mayor Feliciano Belmonte, Jr. He was elected as City Mayor in 2001 and will serve until 2010. When Mayor Belmonte was elected in 2001, he inherited a bankrupt government. The city was heavily indebted and unable to pay more than a billion pesos to various suppliers and contractors. The City was poorly managed and could not deliver the basic services to the residents.

In less than three (3) years, Mayor Belmonte was able to turn the City into the richest City in the Philippines. How did he do it? He first instituted the needed reforms like streamlining and computerizing the revenue assessment and collection functions of the city. He was able to develop a database that contains 400,000 property units capable of serving 20.000 taxpayer transactions per day .He likewise overhauled the garbage collection and payment system and instituted other needed fiscal management reforms aimed at generating more revenues for the city. He eventually made substantial savings by streamlining the garbage collection system and reduce the incidence of graft and corruption in most operating departments of the City.

One of the known contributory factors that led to the enrichment of the city's coffers was the aggressive collection efforts by the City Treasury in collecting real estate taxes. The City was able to collect substantial amount from the residents who were in arrears in their property taxes. Most of the tax delinquent residents were threatened with immediate foreclosure and auction of properties due to non-payment of taxes that remained unpaid for many years. The city offered concessions like extended payment terms, discounts, etc. Tax amnesty option was likewise made available to residents. He also got rid of about 3,000 casual employees; most of them are political appointees. These innovative policies proved effective and the residents cooperated when they realized that the Mayor was serious in his tax collection efforts.

Today, the city government continues to generate substantial revenues in the form of income and business taxes. The residents have cooperated while the business community continues to support the Mayor in his programs for people of Quezon City. One of the reasons why city continues to get the needed support of the residents is the visible infrastructures that are being implemented by the city. This includes concreting of roads, construction of school buildings, markets, housing for the poor and other public utilities. For sure, the residents will continue to support the administration of Mayor Belmonte for as long as they see where their taxes go.

Because of the healthy financial position of the city, the Mayor has embarked into building state of the art infrastructures for the business community. These include among others, the transformation of part of the UP Campus into a modern business hub where multinational offices and business process outsourcing are relocating and the conversion of the Timog-Tomas Morato area into a Tourism Zone.

About the Mayor

Mayor Feliciano Belmonte, Jr.is a former Congressman and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Former President of Philippine Airlines and GSIS, former President of Philippine Jaycees and Jaycee International, a Paul Harris Fellow for Rotary International, Mr. Belmonte is a Lawyer. His late wife, Betty Go-Belmonte was the founder of Philippine Star, a major Philippine Newspaper. He also served in various capacities in the Executive Branch of the Government and in major private corporations in the Philippines.

The Most Efficient Ways to Travel in Europe

So you've thought about the trip for months, strategically planning on which cities to visit and what time of year to go. Yet while it's simple to decide how to get to Europe (you'll fly, unless you're nostalgic for early 20th century boat travel), how to get between your favorite destinations within the continent can be a difficult decisions.

First, there are the usual airline carriers. They are fast, safe, and reliable. But they are also pricey and may not always be an option. The second choice would be to go with a budget airline, but their reliability is often in question and in order to get the best deal you may have to fly on dates that do not cohere with your long anticipated travel plans. Fortunately, there are two other very good options to keep your plans afloat without sinking your wallet.

Trains

Fast, safe, and often less expensive than traditional airline carriers trains are how Europeans travel within Europe - and who better to learn from than Europeans themselves? Trains are a great option because not only do they provide an affordable way between almost all cities, but they run more frequently than planes and afford you the opportunity to see more of the countries you are visiting. In fact, an entire trip can revolve around a train trip. Perhaps you wish to retrace the path of the Orient Express. By train it's easy to get off at any stop and stay for a few hours, then hop on the next train to wherever you were going. Non-reserved tickets can be purchased for almost all trains giving the bearer an option of several months within which to travel. The flexibility and affordability are hard to beat!

So why chose anything other than trains for travel within Europe? Well, when trains are an option, you shouldn't! But sometimes towns are too small or too remote for train stations. In that case, take the bus!

Bus

Often regarded as unsafe travel in Eastern European countries, busses - minibuses included - are safe ways to travel to areas where trains don't go. Busses are ultra affordable and occasionally good alternatives to trains when traveling on a really tight budget. Busses run very frequently and offer smooth traveling - most busses are well designed for comfort, even during extended trips. In fact, many conclude on the end of their bus journey that even Polish minibuses are superior to the Greyhound services available in the United States! The one drawback to busses is that bus drivers rarely speak English and stops are usually announced only in the native language so riding prepared is a must!

Fly Away! The Ultimate Guide to Budget Airlines Travel

In the past, traveling by air was often considered a luxury because of the fact that airplane tickets cost such a substantial amount of money. Now, almost everyone can allow themselves to fly to their desired destination with the lowest airfares available. Using these great tips and links, airfare packages have never been easier to find cheaply

The concept of low cost airfares is not surprising, and it has become a new trend and phenomenon in the world of traveling. This concept has been well received by low and medium income families who can now also fly to their desired destinations. The foremost aim of the low cost airfare concept is to enable even more people to travel a great deal more often.

How Can Airlines Offer Such Low Cost Airfares?

The low-cost airline's main mission is to offer a more inexpensive, convenient and simpler form of transportation to its travelers. To achieve this mission, the airlines have to cut their costs to a minimum by eliminating some unnecessary expenditure.

The main feature of low cost carriers is that their airfares are extremely lower than other big-scale airline companies. In Europe, for example, their airfares are half or less than that the larger airline company's airfares. Many of these airfares are often lower than train tickets. Despite lower airfares, the profits of these airlines are often higher than larger airlines, with their sales profits going as high as 20 to 30%.

Low cost carriers do not use the major airports, instead they fly to and from secondary airports that are not necessarily the busiest. These secondary airports usually have lower operating costs than bigger major airports. Furthermore, the secondary airports are less congested and their “turnaround times” are shorter for the flights. Many European cities have more than one airport and for many small cities that are adjacent to the major cities, they often have their own airports. Because Europe's railways and highways use a very developed network, the passengers do not usually feel any inconvenience if the airports are located a little farther away from the major cities.

Low-cost carriers maintain lower labor costs because they mainly engage in short-distance business trips, and the pilots and crews do not stay overnight. Their wages are much lower than larger airline companies, and yet the average flying time is much longer. As the routes are allocated for only 2 to 3 hours for the short-haul flights, passengers are not usually provided with free meals. All foods and drinks sold are an addition.

No seats are reserved or allocated for passengers and so they will have to take any seats available, but luggage is allowed to be checked-in and taken on board.

The seating space in the plane is usually narrowed to allow more space for accommodating more passengers on board the flight. In this manner, their revenue can help in boosting their profits by at least 10%. Because flights are generally shorter, the passengers can easily accept the narrow distance between the seats.

These low cost airlines usually sell their air tickets via travel agents, travel-based search engines, and the internet, and do not need to rent a huge office space which may incur higher costs. By booking flights via internet or through an airline's call center, you do not have to pay a travel agent any commission, which would otherwise increase the airfares. You will end up saving even more money by not using travel agents to book a reservation.

Most low cost carriers cut their costs because no arrangements are made with any airline companies on flight transfers or connecting flights which would otherwise be reflected in the airfares. They employ pilots, flight attendants, operations personnel and mechanics who are specialized in a single type of aircraft, which saves the expenditure of re-training the staff, instead of maintaining a stock with parts for different types of aircraft. These are some of the reasons why the pricing is more affordable, economic and extremely low.

7 Essential Tips To Getting Low Cost Airfares

The low cost airline companies will catch your attention with extremely low airfares banners or advertisements that require you to book the tickets 6 or 9 months ahead of the traveling date. You have to grab these opportunities by making a reservation from their respective websites. These airfares get sold very fast.

Once the tickets are sold out, the low-cost seats will not be available anymore and you will have to pay more if you purchase the ticket later. You have to book the ticket immediately as it will last only 24 hours. In other words, you have to plan your trip earlier and book the ticket in advance. By doing this, you may be able to get the best deal that is worth every penny.

Now, you need to get a list of low cost airlines. You may use the suggested list attached in this article to choose your desired traveling destinations. E-mail the airlines to obtain some details on when their companies offer a promotional trip package, when the low cost airfares are on sale, and when to look for seasonal or discounted airfares. Once you get a list from them, you can familiarize yourself with the low cost airlines that fly from your local or nearby airport to your desired destination. This information may also be included on your local airports website.

With these e-mail lists at hand you will be one step closer to getting to know which new destinations are launched that can generally offer discounted or low airfares as an added promotion to attract tourists to visit those places. They also offer numerous packages which can include car rentals and hotels. This way, you can save money instead of paying for each particular aspect of the flight individually.

Browse through the dates on low airfare searches in order to find out how much you can save. You will be surprised to find out that the rates for weekdays, weekends, school holidays, public holidays and seasonal holidays all have different rates. You should try to travel during the off-peak seasons in order to get the discounted or low cost airfare packages.

Because flights are usually not fully occupied during the off season, you will receive better discounts. The airfare in general, is also less for morning flights than for evening flights because the airlines want to make sure the flight will be fully occupied before the plane takes off.

In some cases, you will have to be patient while you wait for the release of cheap airfares. Some big airlines buy tickets in bulk and resell them at lower rates through the internet. This is because they want to sell as many tickets as they can to make sure that their flights are fully occupied.

It is important to do some research trying various sources while looking for cheap airfares. The information is usually available at sites set up by airlines, travel agencies, or travel-based search engine sites. Internet is by far the best option to let you to search through as many sources in the fastest and most most effective way to let you obtain all the information you want. Search engines like Kayak, Expedia, Travelocity or Mobissimo enable you to search travel sites for the cheapest fares by simply entering the date of travel and the destination. After you hit the Search button, all related flights information will be displayed on the screen. If you are happy with the airfare, you can book your ticket immediately.

Remember, do not make a quick decision. You should always check on multiple search engines like Kayak, Cheapflights, Iwantthatflight, Attitudetravel, Qixo, Whichbudge, Cheapair, SKYSCANNER, Wikipedia or Bookingbuddy to compare the airfares. The travel agencies can have prices much higher or much lower than another. Make sure that you check with the airlines about whether the airfare includes routes (direct flights, stopovers or connecting flights), refunds or extra charges, and if their rules for cancellations before buying the tickets suits you.

A hotel plus air package is often worth buying because the prices are offered at a rate lower than the airfare without the hotel accommodations. Lastminute.com has been found to have some of the the best deals in this field. The Travelocity who owns Lastminute is one of the best options for you to book your last minute travel reservations while still helping you save money.

Always make sure that you keep abreast of the different airfares offered by various airlines companies. The prices fluctuate like the stock market and the airlines may update their domestic fares up to two or three times a day. If you are serious about saving your money, you should really check them out regularly.

Try to combine two separate fares rather than buying an individual airfare which will probably cost you more. Travelocity or another travel-based search engine may provide you with even more information regarding combining fares.

Smelly Business

These five jobs must be the smelliest ones. If you have weak stomach or sensitive nose, you probably will gag if you have to perform this duty. Thanks to the people who can handle these jobs, we live in a nicer world.

Sewer Workers

If you can’t take foul smell, then this job is not for you. Can you imagine working underground, inside a sewer that has awful smell? Especially in a big city like
New York
, with all of that residential and tourist population ... I know I wouldn’t be a good candidate!

Garbage Collectors

This is another field that deals with strong smell, especially in the heat of summer. Without these people, our garbage will be piled up, rotten, and horribly stinky! I have seen things that come out of decay trash that gives me a chill down my spine. At least it's good to know the trash may be put to good use, like
what GE is doing in Italy.

Plumbers

If you ever have problem with your toilette, you know that this isn’t a job for you. Thankfully,
a plumber
is only a phone call away. The sight of that mess is enough to throw me over the bridge, not to mention the smell. We often complain that they charged an arm and a leg for their service, but really, would you be able to handle it?

Manure or Compost Pile Handlers

Driving by a farm that has a fresh blanket of manure can just kill your nose. If you need any affirmation, while cruising down Interstate 5 in California, you will likely be attacked by such a stench from a
local ranch
. Yet, there stands a house nearby, and children play in front. Because of these people, we have food to eat to nurture of body.

Fish Market Workers

Fisherman’s Wharf
in San Francisco has a variety of wonderful foods if you can make it passed the smell of fish. Most of these stands are in open market, but the smell can be overwhelming. Can you believe that there is a fish recycling plant in
Warrenton, Oregon? That will not be on my field trip list.

Thank you to the people who work in this smelly business. Without you, the world will be unclean and hungry. You have my deepest appreciation.

Business Trends of Singapore

Singapore. One look at the country's location on the world map would show you that it is indeed a very small country. It consists of one main island and 60 smaller isles. It has a total land area of 647.5 square kilometers with a current population of 4 million as of 2006. Considered to be the most crowded country in the world, approximately 15,200 persons occupy per one square mile (5,900 per square kilometer). However, despite its limited reserves, the country was able to turn its meager resources into a roaring economic giant. Now, Singapore is considered to be one of the most successful developing nations in the world.

From gaining capital through entrepot in the past decades, the country has risen to becoming one of the four Asian tigers along with Hong Kong, South Korea and Taiwan. It has stepped up the economic ladder from the bottom all the way to the top. To date, Singapore is the fourth largest Foreign Exchange trading center after London, New York and Tokyo. It is also considered to have one of the busiest ports in the world with over 600 shipping lines in operation, and a leader in shipbuilding and repairing.

Due to its inadequate natural resources, Singapore's economy largely depends on import/ export and manufacturing. Thus the country focused on manufacturing products such as electronics, petroleum refining, chemicals, mechanically engineered equipments and biomedical devices. It also houses more than 130 banks making it one of the most important financial centers in Asia. And in terms of tourism, Singapore has about 9.7 million visitors every year.

A closer look at Singapore's business trends would show that there are some methods or formula that precipitated their economic growth. According to Singapore's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Kishore Mahbubani, there are four relatively simple prescriptions. And these are: sustain a free and open economy, welcome foreign investment, aim for budgetary surpluses, and avoid any financial aid. Equipped with these factors, together with hard work, innovation and effective economic strategies, Singapore has become a country of strength and economic power.
