Cyprus: Great for The Heart

A consultant heart surgeon, female and well-respected in Britain where she works, says that the amount of red wine we should imbibe for the good of our health is three glasses a day, and not the widely-publicized two. She also wryly pointed out that the same applied to sex - all for the good of our hearts. She never made it clear whether it was a week or a day in which all the fun was to be accommodated.

In Cyprus, we are well placed to take advantage of the health-giving aspects of the Mediterranean diet: the olive oil, salads, fish and of course red wine. What a pity so much of the wine is insipid. It need not be so.

The amount of sun should produce intense reds. Look what comes out of the Southern Rhone or even the softer Herault reds…. Even comparing like for like, some of the reds from Greece like Nemea or the big-bodied fella' from Santorini offer a satisfying mouthful.

And leading the way under extreme duress is a gentleman in the Lebanon - Serge Hochar. He produces a magnificent red, complex, aromatic and mouth-filling that rivals some of the big wines from the Rhone or Bordeaux where he trained.

Some years his acclaimed wine, Chateau Mussar, does not declare a vintage. The problems of a vineyard six checkpoints away from the winery in the Bechaar Valley; picking and transporting while shells burst around, defeat even his enthusiasm. But when he makes it, the wine is long-lived and delicious.

Here, winemakers are only just cottoning to the fact that there is more to it than pouring cheap alcohol down holdymakers' throats. Try Keo's Heritage, a vintage wine from rediscovered Cyprus varietals; at the moment limited to 15,000 bottles a year. Another good drink is Kannavera from Vouni Panayia Winery and let's not forget Fikardos' succulent Lefkarda.

You might also keep an eye on some of the wines coming from Kathikas like Vasilikon. Providing these producers don't get inflated ideas on cost, we should all heartily support them. After all it is for the good of our health.

Tourist Attraction: Mount Cameroon

Cameroon also known as "Africa in Miniature" and described by its government as the "melting pot of Africa" is found in the West African sub-region.

It is a country that has been blessed with many tourist attractions, its ministry of tourism was created in the 1970's to encourage investment in this sector. Tourist attractions include amongst others; wildlife parks, highlands, lakes, Mankon Fondom (kingdom) and museums.

Despite government's efforts over the past decade to boost the sector, its growth has been hampered by poor infrastructure and mis-administration. However, this has not deterred foreigners from visiting the country's attractions.

Tourists Climbing Mount Cameroon

One of the main sites that attracts many foreigners and nationals alike is "Mount Cameroon" also known as "Mount Fako". It is situated in Buea, in the Fako division of the South West province of the country.

It measures 4100 kilometres, the highest point in Central Africa and the second highest point in Africa after Mount Kilamanjaro in Kenya. The mountain rises from the coast through tropical rainforest to a bare summit which is cold, windy and occasionally brushed with snow.

The Mount Cameroon forests are under threat from uncontrolled forest exploitation and encroachment for agricultural production. A population of approximately 350,000 people live within its immediate vicinity, around half of this population live in the urban settlements of Limbe and Buea.

The Bakweri, Bomboko and Balundu people traditionally live on and around the mountain, together with the coastal Bimbia clans; the livelihoods of these people are directly or indirectly supplemented through the harvesting of the forests resources such as timber and non-timber products such as removing bark for medicines, gathering wild vegetables, collecting rattans for making furniture and hunting.

The mountain has erupted six times in the previous century, the latest recorded eruption was in March/ April 1999. During the eruption, the lava flow destroyed farmlands in localities found on the slope of the mountain such as Bakingili, Batoke and Upper farms.

In local folklore the God of the mountain is known as Efasah Moto, it's believed to be composed of two halves, i.e. man and stone; it is also believed that it takes care of people by providing them with water, shelter and food during their journey up and down the mountain. Visitors are allowed to harvest what they can consume while on the mountain but are not allowed to take away anything provided by Efasah Moto. Belief in the God provides an interesting cultural link to ecotourism and sustainable use of resources.

Apart from individuals or groups who go for excursions on the mountain, there is an annual international race that is organised by the Government known as the "Mount Cameroon Race of Hope". The initiative was started in 1995 by the company that brews Guinness.

The race usually brings together hundreds of athletes with scores of them coming from abroad. The starting point of the race is the Molyko Omnisport stadium and participants pass through upper farms, huts 1,2 & 3 before reaching the summit and returning back to the starting point. Participants are divided into male and female categories, they are then further sub-divided into professionals, youths, and amateurs.

The first winner of the male category usually takes just over four hours to complete the race while that for the female category usually takes around 4 hours and 30 minutes. Prize money is in the region of two thousand pounds.

Night Clubbing in Taiwan: Luxy

Girl sees cute Asian guy dancing by himself or with some guy friends. Girl decides to be a little forward and try dancing with this cute Asian guy. They dance at least a foot apart from each other. Girl touches guy's arm for an IOI (indicator of interest, read the game). Guy is stupid, just keeps dancing. Girl doesn't get the IOI, girl leaves exasperated.

The club is like 60% Asian, 30% white, 10% black/other. Then the Asian guys you meet are from the States or somewhere where they speak English, and probably doesn't speak Chinese. Let me just put it this way: The most native Taiwanese person I met was a 27 year old guy from London. He said he'd been living in Taipei city for a very long time. He spoke Chinese with a English accent.

There are lots of guys that are old enough to be your dad there. As the night goes on, it gets worse. You think it gets better because you see some cute Asian guys, but then you see their body language and realize their ego is way to inflated and it's a complete turn off.

 Drinks are extremely expensive.

The girls are still like the girls in the States, but they don't like to show it as much. They have an itch though, I see it when they get drunk. They start grinding everything, but they like to pretend they aren't promiscuous.

Conclusion: Want to date a white guy? Go to
Luxy.

Taiwan Night Clubbing: Plush

At first glance,
Plush
was beautiful. It had a great view, it was small, it was nice. It was a high class establishment. Well, as high class as night clubs get anyway.

We had a table thanks to Herbie and his sweet connections. However, as people started trickling in, I noticed a lack of good looking guys in the club. In fact, it was worse than that, I noticed a lack of young guys in the club period. So since this club was expensive to get into. That means that the people in here have to be rich too. That means that the majority of the guys were creepy old men with lots of cash in their hands and camera ready to go. As I was moving through the crowd, I danced a little, but this only led to me being caught by some guy who did not look that old but he was creepy alright and he was way too touchy freely. I had to get saved by my buddy DJ Kao. It was not fun. Let me just put it that way.

The girls are hot though. The girls are smokin' hot. But this is not a good combination. What ended up happening was me and my friends going into the cage to have a good time and then old men took pictures up my dress. It kind of makes me sad that I wore my slutty dress to this club. What a waste...

Also, it was possibly the greatest display on how good Asians are at taking their alcohol. All the way to the bathroom, I saw people throwing up. I felt bad for the team of people they hired to clean up the puke. Yeah, they had people.

Oh there was also this lame moment where they turned on the lights, stopped the music, and told everyone on the loudspeaker that the cops were here and had to check our IDs. So everyone got carded, again. Pretty sick. We sat there for a while, too. Of course, it was all complicated at our table because we have a bunch of out-of-country IDs.

One good thing I noticed about Plush though was the fact that they played pretty good music for the most part. Although a lot of it was still hard to dance to, it's better than techno-rave music at Luxy after midnight. I love Luxy, though...

Although, I must say that I had a great time at Plush because I spent the time with a great group of people. I danced with our group and got saved if any creepers came by (Thanks, DJ Kao).

So here's the final call on Plush. If you're a guy, young, you're hot, and you can afford to get in, please do and save all the hot girls from the creepy old men.
