Five Great Long Car Ride Games

Do you just die of boredom after the first 30 minutes of a car ride? Well here are 5 great games that will make those long painful car rides turn into fun car rides.

ABC Game

This is a fun easy game and everyone can play it. All that you do is find the alphabet. You start with finding an A then B then C, and so forth. First person who finds the whole alphabet wins. The alphabet has to go in order and all the letters have to be outside the car.

I Spy Game

This is probably the easiest game ever invented. One person finds an object inside or outside the car, and then he starts to describe it. One or more people will start guessing what the object is. The person who guessed the object right first wins, and then he becomes the person who describes the objects.

Categories

For this game you need at least 3 people to play. The group of people who are playing choose a category like animals, cars, or foods. Then they choose a letter and you have to say something in that category that starts with the letter. You go around in a circle saying something in the category and if someone says something that has been said before, say something that starts with the wrong letter, or takes a lot of time is out. The last person who is still in the game won.

Rock, Paper, Scissors

Everyone knows how to play this game. Its simple paper beat rock. Scissors beat paper. Rock beats scissors.

Singing

Choose your favorite song turn it on the radio, and sing along with it. Everyone likes to sing along with some good tunes.

All of these games are fun and easy to play. So next time you go on a long car ride try some of these games, and it will make the car ride go by so much faster! Go and give it a try.

How to Survive That Road Trip

After days of web surfing, you finally found that perfect beach house for two weeks. Now the next step is to pack and get ready to go. The only catch is you and your kids will have a 12-hour drive. Help? You cannot even rent a video without someone screaming or crying. Here are a few tips from former survivors of that long road trip club.

Make sure every member of your team has a road trip bag. Each one will be tailored made for the owner of the bag. Help each child or adult (husband) pick out items to use easily and quietly. Some examples for kids are crayons and other coloring items, books to read, scissors and a glue stick. Let them pack a few of their favorite snacks so they can help themselves. Any small toys that are easy to play with also help to pass the time. Also, have them bring their pillow and a blanket for rest time.

Have each child start a journal and map. Even if the child cannot write, they can draw or scribble a picture. This makes a great souvenir and they did it themselves. Make a photocopy of your mapped out trip so they can follow along. No more are we there yet?

If you have access to a DVD player let each child pick out a few movies that everyone can enjoy. Put their names in a hat and pick first, second and so forth. This avoids the Johnny is your favorite speech. You can pick up good portable DVD player for a reasonable amount at most stores and the investment is worth saving your hair from going grey.

Play car games like count all the green cars or white vans. The first child to get to ten gets to pick the next item to find. Web sites such as Games Kids Play have a whole collection of fun things to do on the road.

Plan rest stops. I know you just want to get there. If you map out your stops, you kids can break down the trip so it will not seem so long to them. Try to find a stop were they could stretch and run a little (or a lot) then when they get back in the vehicle, they are tired. Bring along a Frisbee or soccer ball. Make sure everyone does there duty at the rest spot. You do not want to stop again once you get back on the road.

The best-planned trips will always have a hitch. This will actually make family memories last in the end. Sometimes we just have to go with the punches. I always tell my kids the old saying when in Rome do as the Romans do.

New Zealand Factoids

Per capita, New Zealand contains more bookshops and more golf-courses than any other country in the world. The image of New Zealand as ‘just a sporting nation’ is actually false. New Zealanders are intelligent too.

Per capita New Zealand has more sheep than any other country in the world. (The Japanese tourists go crazy over them.) In recent years the highest number of sheep the country had was some 70 million in 1981. The sheep population, however, has dwindled since then, so that by 1999 there were only around 45 million. That’s still around 11 sheep per man, woman and child.

New Zealand is the first country to see the sunrise, and consequently was the first country to see in the new Millennium. That’s officially correct only because the first place in the world to see the sunrise each day, the Chatham Islands, belongs to New Zealand. The three islands making up New Zealand itself are some 45 minutes behind the Chathams.

New Zealand has the most southerly railway station, vineyard and pub in the world. These are all in the South Island. The most southerly capital city in the world, Wellington, is in the North Island.

This same capital city, Wellington, has more restaurants per capita than any other city in the world - including New York. Either Wellingtonians are a hungry lot and eat out frequently, or else there are plenty of restaurants that don’t do very well.

Auckland, which some New Zealanders (mostly Aucklanders) consider should be the capital city, has more boats per capita than any other city in the world. Auckland has several fine harbours, and of course, the Americas Cup was hosted there with great success in the past.

Per capita, New Zealanders have more access to the Internet than any other country in the world. This is not to say that every New Zealander has broadband, or even good access to the Net. Some enterprising New Zealanders have found their own way to get access, with more or less success. And Wellington gets in on the act once more: it’s the most wired city in the world - per capita.

Per capita, New Zealanders have the second highest rate of car ownership in the world. Fortunately, New Zealanders are spread over the land fairly thinly, so there are still plenty of places where you can drive for miles without seeing another car.

New Zealand was the first country in the world to give women the vote, to adopt the eight-hour working day, to operate a tourist board and to introduce the retirement pension. Unfortunately, these great gains have been eroded somewhat over the last few decades. Women, of course, still have the vote - in fact, New Zealand has had two female Prime Ministers - but many people work longer hours for less money now. With the advent of retail weekends, where shops are expected to be open at all hours, many people in retail have lost their right to any sort of proper weekend. And the retirement pension, which used to be set at 60, is now up to 65 - and may climb higher. For better or worse, people in New Zealand are just living longer.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed entirely in New Zealand, in spite of concerns from the American producers, in spite of the fact that the director, Peter Jackson, had never directed one film of that scale before, let alone three, and in spite of the fact that they all said it couldn’t be done. ‘They’ were wrong as usual. New Zealanders aren’t the sort of people who give in easily.
