L.A. Area Restaurants

There are a lot of good places to eat in the Los Angeles area, but for someone who visits, it's going to take someone who knows the streets of the city to show you where the real good places to eat at. Some may not be well known my travel agents, but they are known by me, for I am a lifelong resident of this big city. It may be a short list, but I'm very selective on where I eat at and which places are worth going back to. So without further adieu, here we go:

Tito's Tacos

11222 Washington Pl.,
Culver City, CA 90230
(310) 391-5780
www.titostacos.com

Although this place serves its standard Mexican fare, it's tacos that reign supreme. At $1.95 with cheese ($1.50 without), the shredded beef tacos are worth the long lines on a daily basis. Open 9 am-11:30 pm daily.

California Chicken Café

2005 Westwood Bl.
Los Angeles, CA 90025
(310) 446-1933
www.californiachickencafe.com

Excellent portions of dark & white meat chicken, salads that'll make you unsure as to what you want to order. However, it's the wraps that I go there for. The combo wrap that has chicken, avocado, jack cheese, sprouts, Italian dressing, lettuce, tomato, and mayo is the most popular one, and the one I go almost every time. Its $7.50 and it's worth the price. Open 11 am-10 pm, M-F; noon-10 pm on Sat. They're closed on Sundays.

Diddy Reese Cookies

926 Broxton Ave.
Los Angeles, CA 90024
(310) 208-0448

For the sweet tooth in me, I head to this place for some excellent ice cream cookie sandwiches. It may be a challenge trying to find a parking space and the place is near UCLA, but once I go inside, I'm in heaven, and you will be too. Call for hours.

Nezz 74 Cafe, Davao City

The coffee shop is near so many other restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and other fun stops. While the place is simple, its practicality goes a long way. I lounge at their comfy couches and see a group of Chinese ladies chattering loudly in their own language, biker guys outside waiting for the promise of a sumptuous meal, and laptop savvy professionals intently working with a hot cup of coffee. The interiors may not be that luxurious but it is very much inviting to the bigger population. Compared to most coffee shop prices, their menu has a wide variety of meals and drinks to choose from for very affordable prices. I chose a Cookies and Cream frappuccino while waiting for my boss - and for 70 pesos, its way too good. You have to eat the whipped cream with all its chocolate syrup on it first before it goes down with the shake…

So the concept is very much practical to the typical Filipino - you can way enjoy getting a full meal or a delectable coffee/cake meal without getting broke. The place is also big and inviting enough to get a group of friends to chat or whole parties to celebrate. Plus, after enjoying great dining in Nezz 74 Café, you can hop around Obrero St. with all the bars and restos it has to offer.

Lachi's Restaurant, Davao City

If you haven't tasted their Unforgettable Spare Ribs, you are missing a lot in your short, short life…

I didn't believe the account of my sister was credible. But who wouldn't say no to a free meal, eh? My sister, a down-to-the-core Lachi's fan, always tells me that the restaurant serves the best meals in Davao. It is also the supplier of cakes for most of the coffee shops in this city. It is located in the suburbs - away from the bustling downtown area. When my sister and I went there, the place is kind of underwhelming. It was very small and simple looking of a place, very typical of a Filipino karinderya.

I was wrong…very, very wrong …

When I had my first taste of their Unforgettable Spare Ribs, it was heavenly bliss. The spare ribs are soft, juicy, and flavorful - you can eat it to the bones. Every bite of the spare ribs and you'll enjoy your heart out. I could write a novel of how great the eating experience was, but it all goes down to how my feet were fleeting under the table. The meal only costs Php 93.00 (converted to dollars that would be barely USD 3.00!!!). My sister ate a Mozzarella Cheese and Tomato Chicken and that one is also not to be missed. I enjoyed the evening bonding with my sister - talking about our dreams in life and the depressions being swallowed by the plate full of viand and hot rice.

The spare ribs were really unforgettable…

My sister and I also had a couple rounds of dessert. We had their delectable Sylvanas - creamy, crunchy, and the right amount of sweetness. We also had some of their cheesecakes that melt in your mouth and not in your face! We also had their symphony cake - music to the mouth with the combination of chocolate, chiffon, and nuts.

As we waited for a taxi outside to get home, it was interesting to find that they were a lot of people who waited outside the little restaurant. They were waiting for their turn to eat the Unforgettable Spare Ribs, since Lachi's have very limited seats. Even writing this review right now makes me crave for the unforgettable again…

Oh my, my mouth is beginning to water again…I am now a certified head-over-heels for Lachi's.

Kasagingan Coffee Shop: Davao City

I enjoyed great coffee and cakes in Kasagingan with my high school friends one Saturday evening. Nothing complements fulfilling conversations better than coffee, sweet cakes, and a close-knit table. Kasagingan is famous for its creative coffee shop design which is mainly inspired by anything that has to do with bananas (Kasagingan is a Visayan word for Banana Farm). There are posters of monkeys and their “monkey business”, bananas in gourmet humor. The coffee shop is a must-visit during the evening where their outdoor coffee shop is illuminated by banana leaf-inspired light installations and gazebos. They also have printing services nearby to cater to busy students and professionals making the most out of the coffee shop's free WiFi.

The coffee shop offers hot and cold coffee, beer, fraps, cakes, pastas, and other meals - so you have a lot to explore. You should check out there banana coffee - which after drinking makes you feel that you have eaten a whole bunch of bananas! My friends and I tried on some of their cakes (Mango Cream Cheesecake, Blueberry Cream Cheesecake, Cheesecake on Oreo, and Tiramisu) which cost from Php 60.00 - Php 120.00 (converted to dollars that would be barely USD 1.00 - USD 4.00 each!). But never mind the price, each bite is heavenly and it complements well with their hot coffee (I had some Café Americano at that time). I shall say it was all bliss, happiness, joy, fun, love, and extreme exhilaration for me. I love fine dining with the camaraderie of your greatest friends on the table…

What to Do in Turin 3

The tour books don't mention Nuove Salette, at least not the ones I've read, but it's the place to eat in Turin. Tucked away in a side street (Via Goito) near Porta Nuova train station, it's a restaurant in Italy rather than an Italian restaurant, and mercifully it doesn't pretend to cater for anyone other than for people who just want to eat. They don't even translate the menu, a skill not yet mastered by most restaurateurs the world over. Local people eat here and everyone seems to know everybody else, but not in a way that excludes strangers. The surrounding streets are seedy, and for some reason the ladies who hang about those streets all wear very short, tight skirts. Strange.

The cooks and waitresses are a friendly lot who don't speak English. I like that, and the menu is fairly self explanatory anyway. The people seem to genuinely want the customers to enjoy themselves and come back for more. They seemed pleased that foreigners came in, but couldn't figure out why.

The menu is standard but extensive and certainly not expensive. I went for the set menu - an unbelievable €20 excluding wine! The wine we ordered was very affordable and more than just drinkable. I was quite chuffed with my choice.

Aperitif - a glass of champagne

Starter - a platter of cold meats, bread, cheese and the tastiest bruschetta I have ever had. Where do Italians get their tomatoes?

Next course - spaghetti (home made) with a meat sauce to die for.

Next next course - lumps of meat roasted on a spit with just enough roasted vegetables and salady bits to go with it.

This was a seriously exceptional and good value meal with no pretension.

Maybe I should have kept that to myself. Hope it's as good when I go back next year.

The Golden Boat

The Golden boat has extremely friendly staff and a wide range of food ranging from noodles from the noodle bar and the extremely popular Peking duck. Since opening in 2005 they have served up great food and became one of the most respected restaurants in Cairns.

The noodle bar has been very new to the store. The noodles in there are great you get to choose what you want in your noodles and you get to choose what kind of soup you want with the noodles. My favourite is the Tom Yum soup which is a spicy soup. It's Delicious. They also serve a drink now named "bubble tea". Bubble tea is a combination of things like Milk powder, condensed milk, the range of flavours like taro, chocolate, almond etc, syrup and much more. This is a great drink to have at any time of day especially when you are looking for something unique in Cairns because it is one of two places that serves it! Bubble tea is now my favourite drink because it gives you something to chew on it is very good.

The food is exquisite and they have lots of it on their Al-La-Carte menu. There are lots to go around, its juicy, its yum and it really makes you full. It's the best chinese food I have ever tasted in my entire life. Here's how it works you go in and one of there friendly staff seats you down in the large dinning area, then they will give you a menu so you can order off, in no time the chef cooks your delicious meal. They also have a wide range of LIVE seafood, you can choose from a fish name coral trout, mudcrabs, abalone which is a sort of shell fish and ginormous live crayfish! It then gets cooked in the method you like and it is served up to you with a minimum of fuss.

They also cater for large groups of people ranging from eight people to 200 people because they have a large second level where a maximum of 200 people can sit. So you can have a party or a business function. There dinning room is huge so there is room for everyone.

In the mornings there is something call Yum-Cha which mean drinking tea in chinese. The food trolleys which have food in them get pushed around to your table and you get to pick what you like there is seaweed and prawn, Soy sauce noodle, deserts and so much more that you will be so full you won't be able to eat another bite!

The Garden

The Garden
Address: 179 Upper Street, Islington, London, N1 1RG
Tel: 020 7226 6276

It ' s not that often that I visit an eatery for a meal in Central London, but the Garden introduced me to a new way of " city dining " . The Garden has a nice accommodation for customers suited for every season of the year. There ' s a forecourt with benches for the customers to enjoy both the sun and the food. And if course there ' s a classic pub décor in the dining room where the atmosphere is nice and cosy in the winter. The walls are white with a lower half wood beat panelling. Very upmarket for the locals. There are three wide screen TVs broadcasting sports channels. I was lucky enough to have watched a football match between Arsenal and Newcastle United on my visit. They had a projection TV for this match which is watchable from the front of the pub. The staff are confident and friendly, wear a uniform and know how to cook food and serve drinks at the same time. There are DJ evenings on Friday and Saturday nights from 9pm to 2am. Providing a long hard bender of hip-hop, funk and soul. Don ' t worry about the loud music ruining your appetite because food is only served until the disc jockey takes to the stage.

After I got my drink I started off with Cajun Chicken as my main dish. When I paid for my meal I was given a wooden spoon with a number written on it. It was quite a useful solution, given the fact that the tables don ' t have individual numbers. In the Garden you can expect the customers to be at the bar and then move to a table. With the numbered spoons the waiters can see if you ' ve found a table after you ' ve ordered. All you have to do is hold your number up.

My dish was served in a matter of minutes. Perfectly presented with chips, garden peas, beer battered onion rings, mushrooms, half a grilled tomato and a small tub of salsa sauce. The meat was richly tendered and almost non greasy, which makes a change from my own cooking where I ' m unable to control the amount of oil I put into it. The onion rings had a nice crispy texture with a good flavour, but the chewy centre was almost pasty. The mushrooms aren ' t too soft but they are very nicely browned. The chips are fantastic that they make a decent change from the soggy grit of a chippy ' s deep fat fryer. Absolutely irresistible! I like the origin for the peas as their very crunchy and finely picked. Obviously they ' ve been cooked in a flash to avoid them from going mushy. The tomato was absolutely brilliant. The chef takes great care with vegetables. I must come here for a vegetarian night. As for the salsa sauce, well I could definitely tell they had no plastic traces in them. Like me I prefer sauces freshly made by blending them from vegetables.

After I finished my food I took a good long look at the menu. They offer a variety of do it yourself chips and burgers whereby you choose your own toppings and sauces. On the mains there are five chicken dishes, a curry, a traditional fish and chips, ham, egg and chips and sausage and mash. Basic home cooking done on a greater level, simple, gorgeous and satisfying. Vegetarians have their choices of lasagne and a cannelloni. There ' s a special deal on some of the mains where you can order " 2 for £6.45 " . The sandwiches, wraps and melts are all served with a dressed salad garnish, coleslaw and chips. The optional breads are baguette, bap and bloomer. There ' s a fantastic offer for a sunday lunch as well. For £5.95 you can have roast beef or roast chicken served with mash potato, fresh vegetables and yorkshire puddings with gravy. Beetroot and goat ' s cheese is on offer for vegetarians. There ' s an extra charge of £2.00 for a dessert.

Talking of which I didn ' t resist a tasty chocolate orange pudding with chocolate ice cream. The ice cream was optional. You can have it with custard instead if you like. The ice cream was smooth and creamy, but it wasn ' t topped on the pudding. By the time I got to the warm pudding my tongue was saying " high five " to my brain. My taste buds were gagging for the chocolate coated cream and the soft orange flavour in the texture. Always be sure to have a hot milky tea with the pudding as it makes an excellent dessert. This was the perfect evening to host the social occasion that I ' d been invited to. I ' ll always find a time to go there again. The atmosphere is just as good as the food and drink.

Appeals to sports fans, family friendly, classic gastro pub, North London. Prices range from £3 - £10 a meal.

I like Turkish and Chinese cuisine. I like eating Turkish food, as can be expected, since I live in Turkey. I eat Chinese food when I go out with my colleagues and friends. It was three years ago when I first tasted a Mexican food Quesadillas. It was very delicious. I asked my friends whether they liked Quesadillas or not. Our first impressions were positive about Quesadillas. All my friends confessed that Quesadillas was really delicious. After that day, Both I and my friends searched on other Mexican food.
