Dublin on a Shoestring

Exploring the Sights

Much of the city's varied history and architecture can be admired from a simple walking tour, from the "Dublin Spire" built in the millennium to the gothic-style St Patrick's Cathedral and the ancient castle which stands guard above the banks of the River Liffey.

The National Library and National Museum are, surprisingly, free to explore, along with the Colin Barracks and the castle's courtyards and Chapel Royal. If you are in Dublin on a Tuesday, there is also a free tour of the House of Lords which is well worth a visit for anyone interested in the country's troubled politics.

For a taste of Ireland beyond the capital, a reasonable bus ticket and short ride will allow you to enjoy the fifty acres of the National Botanic Gardens. To the south, Sandycove has a renowned bathing spot to tempt brave travelers into the chill of the Irish Sea whilst Killney hill boasts a fantastic (and free) panorama of the city below.

Eating and Drinking

Dublin may be better known for its barrels of Guinness but it still houses some good quality eateries. If you are drawn to a traditional meal, many pubs will offer a variation on "Irish Stew," although recent cosmopolitan influences mean international restaurants are often more affordable.

Another good budget bet is the Cedar Tree off Grafton Street which serves hearty Lebanese fare at a good price, particularly the early-bird special. The set lunch at Ristorante Romano on Capel Street, meanwhile, offers excellent value for money on Italian dishes.

Alternatively, you could pick up lunch from recommended Munchies Sandwich Bar and head to nearby St. Stephens Green. Here you can picnic away from the bustle of the city and enjoy the quiet company of James Joyce's statue and the park's resident ducks!

Nightlife

As a modern, lively city, Dublin also has plenty of entertainment after dark. Temple Bar is renowned for housing more pubs than even the most seasoned drinker can crawl between but it can be uncomfortably crowded during tourist season and its reputation has pushed up the price of a Guinness. For a cheaper drink, nearby Camden Street is a similarly enjoyable night out and sticking to pints and stout can stretch those Euros still further!

Walking through the streets at night, you're as likely to hear traditional music issuing from the door of a bar as pop tunes and, as late licensing means there is little distinction between pubs and clubs in Ireland, adding music to your evening often comes without the inconvenience of paying entry.

Hard-core clubbers may be tempted to experience the Gaiety Theater which becomes an electronic/dance club at weekends. As it stays open till very late and has five floors of DJs spinning beats, it offers surprising value for money. Just remember to pick a hostel with a late curfew to avoid spending the night on a bridge by the Liffey!

Where to Stay

And when it comes to places to stay, Dublin is packed with good, reasonable accommodation, with the prices at Dublin Hostels ranging from €16 for a dorm bed at Kinlay House, to €23 for a rather swanky private room at the Dublin City Bunkhouse.

It's never a bad idea to check out a variety of Dublin hostel photos before deciding on your bed for the night. But frankly, Kinlay House and Dublin City Bunkhouse make an attractive pair, and are right up there with the very best hostels in Dublin, anyway.

As both hostels are centrally located and Dublin itself is relatively compact, it's possible to explore the whole of the city on foot. Which gives you all the more opportunity to soak up its unique atmosphere and save a little extra cash as you do so!

Travel Destination: Singapore

Singapore is sometimes referred to a “Little Red Dot”. That's about the size of Singapore on the world map - just the size of a full-stop marked in red.

One of Singapore's main attraction is FOOD. As a tourist here, you will be bombarded by the number of shops that sell a very wide variety of Asian cuisines.

There are informal settings where you have to order you food and bring it to your table very much like ordering from a fast-food joint. Difference is that the table where you sit may quite far away from the stall itself. These stalls, it can be up to 20 different stalls, all share a common sitting area. You are spoilt for choice as you decide what to try first.

Noodles and rice are prepared in a number of different manner - fried, soup, dry, semi-dry, chilli, ketchup, clay pot, hot cast-iron plate, mini steamboat, and the list goes on.

Then if you want to pamper yourself, and not join in the hustle and bustle of things, go to a formal restaurant. It is air-conditioned and you have waiters who will take your order and then bring the food to you. Dinning at these restaurants is easily affordable.

Of course, if budget is not an issue, go for fine dinning. You will be pampered as you enjoy the wonderful service and the relaxing pace.

No matter which is your choice of dinning experience, the food tastes simply delicious. You'll be putting on weight when you visit Singapore.

It doesn't matter if you are vegetarian, you will find vegetarian food stalls easily. Singapore is a multi-racial, multi-religious mix, thus the food is catered to all people. There are also internal cuisines easily available as well.

Now you see why Singapore is a food paradise?

The other main attraction in Singapore is SHOPPING. Clothes and electronic gadgets are the top picks for tourists from US and the UK.

Next to every shop that sells food, there is one that sells clothes or other things. It's like there is a master plan that predicts that after you do your shopping, you will be hungry and thirsty, so have the food stalls nearby so that you can replenish your body with food and drink before heading for the stalls again.

Branded clothing like Asley Isham and Wykidd Song to cheap t-shirts for tourists to purchase, branded make up to branded shoes are mainly located at Orchard Road. It is a place where budget is not an issue for you. You will fall in love with these shops here. Another newly opened shopping mall is at the Changi Airport Terminal 3. This is mainly for businessmen who are in Singapore for a one day or half-day transit. It has over 100 retail and food and beverage outlets.

You have to watch out for the Great Singapore Sale (June), Singapore Fashion Festival (July) and the Christmas Light up. These sales are really worth the effort!

These are just 2 main attractions of Singapore and because it is the hottest 2 past times, there is even a shopping mall and a great number of food stalls that are open 24/7.

Speaking of hot past time, Singapore's nightlife (some of the world's best is at Clarke Quay), shopping and fine dinning is ranked top 5 in the world (reported by Country Brand Index by FutureBrand).

These are just 2 top picks why you may want to visit Singapore. Have fun!

The Maltese Islands: A Brief Outlook

Malta is both the name of a nation and of the largest of the Maltese Islands. Gozo is 8km to the north and midway between them is Comino. The island group, which also includes uninhabited Filfla and Cominotto , extends for 28 miles (45km) from northwest to southeast in the center of the Mediterranean Sea.

The Maltese Islands lie 58 miles (93km) south of Sicily, 230 miles (368km) north of Tripoli and 180 miles (288km) east of Tunis. Malta is only 17 miles (27km) by 9 miles (14.5km) with an area of 95 square miles (246km). (In comparison, Manhattan island in New York City is 2 and a half by 12 and half miles.) Gozo is 9.5 by 4 miles. Comino is only one square mile.
Malta is a fascinating blend of history, sunny holidays and hospitality. The colorful past of the Islands ranges from its earliest inhabitants, who built temples there some 6500 years ago, to the arrival of the crusading knights in the Middle Ages and the full brunt of World War II hostilities four centuri es later. Added to the best climate in Southern Europe, it helps attract more than a million tourists to the islands each year.

The islands are ideal for sightseeing. History surrounds you in every town, with a wealth of palaces, churches and fortifications that have survived down the centuries. The top attractions include the capital city of Valletta, with its high ramparts, museums and shopping. The focal point of urban Malta stretches from Valetta to the resorts of Sliema and St Julian's, with their first class hotels and busy nightlife. The Three Cities (Vittoriosa, Senglea and Kalkara) could not be more different. With their rich history, their historic sights and the quiet streets they are more representative of the Malta that people will love and remember.

The ancient walled city of Mdina dominates the center of the island, are area characterized by small towns and villages, each with an impressive church. In the south of Malta are the ancient temples and small fishing villages, while to the north is a tourist development sprawled around St Paul's Bay. The sandy beaches are also in the north.

Across the Comino Channel lies the smaller, greener island of Gozo and between them is the tiny Comino. Both are popular and appealing to the holiday traveler. The sea around the Maltese Islands is as clean and clear as anywhere in the Mediterranean. It is terrific for swimming and excellent for scuba diving, snorkeling and all water sports. Around the resorts there are plenty of boats, canoes and equipment for hire for windsurfing, sailing and waterskiing.

Boat trips operate around the islands and to Comino's spectacular Blue Lagoon. Cliff rising above 800ft (250m) characterize Malta's southern shore. Midway along the opposite coast are the impressive inlets of Grand Harbour and Marsamxett Bay. Malta puts it's seawater to practical use. Since the 1990's it has built a series of reverse osmosis seawater conversion plants around the island. They now fulfill more than half the island's freshwater needs and prevented water shortages in the country.

The climate is just about the best the Mediterranean can offer. The country's appeal as a year around resort owes much to the weather pattern. The hot summer sun from a cloudless sky gives way to mild winter days. The average for the summer is only 26C (79F). However, Malta is further south than parts of North Africa and so the sun burns quickly. The wind blows mostly from the northwest.

The islands offer contrasting scenery. There are no mountains or rivers in Malta. On higher ground, outcrops of limestone contribute to the island's rugged and semi-arid appearance. Lower down, rough limestone walls bounds small enclosures of reddish grown soil, which yield a surprising wide variety of crops.

These include potatoes, tomatoes, onions, capers, wheat, sesame and melons. Small plantations of olives, figs, oranges and lemons exist, but grapes are the main fruit grown. These are used to make the local wine, which is excellent. In the winter and spring, there are many wildflowers and glorious fields of color. More than 600 varieties carpet the valleys and ridges. There are few trees, however, since most were destroyed a long time ago to provide wood for ships and buildings.

While other Mediterranean holiday destinations have seen their fortunes come and go, Malta's popularity remains high. Tourism is the principal industry. The impressive Malta International Airport is able to handle 2.5 million departing passengers a year. A new cruise ship terminal in Valletta receives many cruise liners in the high season.

Maltese and English are the official languages. You will hear Maltese spoken everywhere, but virtually everyone speaks English. Almost all street signs are in Maltese, but most shops and businesses use English in advertising. Malta is a member of the European Union. As of January 2008, Malta now uses the Euro for currency.
