The Maldives claim over 1000 islands, mostly uninhabited, with around 100 of them turned into luxury resorts. They remain the ultimate dream for weddings and honeymoons and a top destination for island hopping and diving. Most retain a desert island feel, all powdery sand and a few palms, with exclusive villas perched on stilts over the water and romantic dinners on sand banks out at sea. However, the flat low-lying Maldives are threatened by rising seas and locals and conservation groups work ceaselessly to ensure their survival and that of the surrounding reef.
