The first settlers arrived in Palmental in 1884, they came from Nebraska and Illinois, they were of Swiss and German descent. In 1899 they changed the name to Palmdale. The thriving community soon grew and had a livery stable, blacksmiths shop, shoe shop, stores, a school, church and post office and of course a land office.
The town had some lovely two-story houses, and the farmers grew alfalfa, with some vineyards and fruit orchards. Naturally they had their own horses, cattle, pigs and chickens. In 1899 they moved from the original site, because of lack of water and the fact that they could not get the deeds to their properties even though they had paid for them.
