The Five Most Expensive Chocolates in the World

Chocolates are something we buy often when we do our shopping. But what if the chocolate is too expensive to be affordable?

Chocolates are one of the many heavenly tastes to our tongues. We buy loads of them and store them in the refrigerator to be eaten at will. But sometimes, buying chocolates can get a little expensive:

CHOCOPOLOGIE

  • Creator: Knipschildt
  • Cost: $2,600 per pound
  • Location: Norwalk, Connecticut

Founded by Fritz Knipschildt, a chef who got his culinary education in Denmark, in 1999, Knischildt creates one of the world's tastiest chocolates. Its costliest on-piece chocolate is a $250 dark chocolate truffle with French black truffle within it (in picture). This special truffle, available only on a pre-order basis, is mainly composed of 70% Valhrona cacao blended into a creamy ganache with truffle oil. The truffle is made with extremely precise bare hands and finally dusted with cocoa powder.

NOKA

  • Creator: Noka Vintages Collection
  • Cost: $854 per pound
  • Location: Dallas, Texas

A compilation of the finest dark chocolates obtained from selective plantations in Venezuela, Côte d'Ivoire, Trinidad and Ecuador, Noka chocolate is the second most expensive in the world. It comprises of 75% pure, single-origin cacao with other ingredients like cacao butter and sugar. One amazing fact about this chocolate manufacturer is that it does not add any type of emulsifier or vanilla flavors in its chocolates.

DELAFEE

  • Creator: Delfee©
  • Cost: $504 per pound
  • Location: Neuchatel, Switzerland

For those ladies who are fans of gold, there's Delafee to be tried out, because this chocolate is made by applying real 24K edible flakes of gold to each praline by hand. Otherwise, it is composed of sugar, coconut oil, cocoa butter, milk powder and vanilla.

RICHART

  • Creator: Richart ©
  • Cost: $120 per pound
  • Location: Lyon, France

Richart chocolate might be only the fourth most expensive chocolate in the world, but it is made up of 70% Criollo cocoa from Venezuela, which is considered to be the best quality of chocolate in the world. The cocoa used in the chocolates is finely ground, to give a smooth taste to any taster. To match with the finest chocolate, the best varieties of almonds, raspberries, strawberries and other exotic species are used.

GODIVA

  • Creator: Godiva “G” Collection
  • Cost: $117 per pound
  • Location: New York City, New York

With its origins from Belgium, the well known chocolatier, Godiva, introduced its “G” Collection of chocolates only recently. The whole of “G” Collections is comprised of various ingredients and flavors like Palet d'Or, Tasmanian honey and Mexican Hot Chocolate. The flavoring of the chocolates depends on the type of bon-bon that is manufactured.

All the chocolates listed here seem to be overpriced( especially the american ones). You'll see what I mean after having tasted chocolates by Patrick Roger in Paris, or Chaudin, in Paris. My all time favs are Chocolate with Basil, Chocolate with Chili, chocolate with irish whiskey
#6 by suzy, Sep 12, 2007
I wonder if they used child slave labor to farm such fine, expensive chocolate?

Oh the illusion of luxury that this culture bestows on us...
#7 by Rachel, Sep 12, 2007
Don't buy NOKA, you're being conned out of your money.
#8 by Helen, Sep 12, 2007
As a long time Godiva eater, I have to say that it is not overpriced. At least I never felt like I was being taken when I purchased it. It was always worth every penny.

You people need to come taste Charles Chocolate from the Southern Caribbean

What???? $2,600 for candy?? That is ridiculous. The wrappers must be pure gold.
#11 by Dianalynn, Sep 13, 2007

Beautiful and tasty article on chocolates.

Not eating chocolate won't help starving children. If you'll notice, almost nobody actually buys these chocolates by the pound. It's quite unlikely somebody would spend that much on chocolate in less than maybe an entire lifetime unless they are extremely rich. Spending ten dollars on chocolate here and there is as evil and selfish as going to the spa now and then - i.e. not very.

Dianalynn makes a great point, except that well, she's on the internet, probably with her own computer (with DSL) surfing the net and posting a "make you feel guilty" comment. Yeah, surfing the net... there's a way to help kids!

In any case, for people making 6 or 7 figures, this stuff is the equivalent of a Friday night dinner. Think Bill Gates balks at $2,600/lb chocolate? Doubt it. He gets that on interest maybe every hour. More than anything, these chocolates are status items except for those few conniseurs who can double-blind tell the difference between a great chocolate and a spectacular one. Fact is, take the wrappers off, make the chocolate look the same and most people couldn't tell which chocolate is better (even if they can tell there is a difference). Okay, rant off. Time to celebrate with some hershey's kisses followed by white zinfandel and kraft cheddar cheese.

I love chocolate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
#20 by sophie, Sep 22, 2007
barf..godiva? read the ingredients list, people..
#21 by dea, Sep 22, 2007
Oh yes, Pierre Marcolini is deathly good chocolate. I've had Richart a few times, but in the more reasonable $32 option. Really excellent fine texture, unlike anything I've ever had before. It's a kind of chocolate that requires a lot of thought. ;)

One name you left off the list is Hershey's, who makes some outstanding chocolate. If you would like to try it, you can easily find it in most groceries and convenience stores. I usually buy mine from the Piggly-Wiggly here in Bob White, WV. Their packaging is distinctive and easily recognizable, and I think they have received high marks from several critics.
#23 by supermacacao, Sep 22, 2007
mmmmmm... I think I'll go get a two dollar dark chocolate bar from the convenience store around the corner now:)

Hi everybody,

Thanks a ton for all the wondeful support you've been providing. There have been many unecessary comments on the article, and I've removed them. To Geronimo, I got the pics from searching on google images.

Thanks again for the awesome support,

Chocolate is chocolate. I defy you to tell the difference in a blind test between a 50 cent Hershey bar and a $2,600 chunk of chocolate. Anyone who thinks chocolate is worth more than a couple bucks probably also believes that buying name brand detergent or mouthwash is better, even though the ingredients (which are RIGHT THERE ON THE LABEL) are ***EXACTLY*** the same.

...I still prefer a good old bar of Cadbury's ;)
Cheers for a great article!

*sigh* How I wish I had a rich boyfriend... I love expensive chocolates and to Dany, these aren't overpriced. The only one that is is the one for $2,600lb. I don't think any chocolate, no matter how heavenly, should be over $1,500lb. I don't know how people can eat Hershy or Mars, it taste like dog crap and it makes me puke if I eat more than a piece.
