A month ago, I moved from Northern Kentucky to Dallas Texas. One thing I miss almost as much as my family and friends is Goetta.
Goetta (pronounced "get-uh") is a tasty German dish made from beef, pork, oats and seasonings. Many people compare it to sasuage and enjoy goetta with their breakfast. Goetta was brought to the Cincinnati area by poverty striken German immigrants in the 19th century. The Greater Cincinnati area is the only place in the United States to enjoy this unique dish. And enjoy it they do. New goetta foods are appearing ever year. Now people are enjoying goetta dogs, goetta burgers, goetta pizza and even... goetta fudge?
Greater Cincinnati loves their goetta so much that since 2004, the area has had an annual goetta fest. Held in Covington Kentucky, just across the river from Cincinnati, this festival not only celebrates everything goetta, but the area's rich German heritiage as well.
So, do yourself a favor, the next time you are in the Cincinnati area, give goetta a taste.
And send some my way.
