Gelato: Is That What I Am Eating?

What gelato is and why it is gaining popularity in America.

Gelato. Ah, what a delicious....what is it?

Well, gelato is simply Italian ice cream. More to the point, it is ice cream with very little air whipped into it so it is much more dense than American ice cream and tastes richer, too. When you chew gelato you're chewing actual food, not just a bunch of air pockets. Gelato is even lower in fat because it is made with non-homogenized milk. As an added plus, gelato is usually made from wholesome ingredients, like fruit, chocolate, nuts, and coffee beans. Gelato also comes in falavors like creme brulee and tiramisu, two popular Italian desserts. Oh boy, isn't this a treat. So, exactly where can I get some gelato?

There are a few gelato franchise shops across the nation, mostly in the big cities like New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and anywhere there is a high concentration of Italian-Americans who love this delicious dessert. The fastest growing franchise is Melt Gelato, with headquarters located in southern California. This franchise not only offers gelato but also crepes and panini, which is an Italian grilled sandwich. The cost of a scoop of gelato ranges depending on the franchise but generally falls into the 2.95 to 3.50 range.

While gelato is fast becoming a popular American dessert, it is not longer just for dessert. It can be eaten at any time of the day and while the hot summer months and the hot southwestern states are the best times and places to eat gelato, you can even enjoy a scoop of gelato at 3:00 AM in the morning if you wish. You don't have to worry about a lot of added calories since most gelato has half the butter fat that American ice cream has. Regardless of where you buy gelato and eat it, it is the best dessert in the world you could ever hope to enjoy.
