If you are going on a long car trip, these tips will help you find your way to your destination.
Don't leave the map at home. Take it with you.
When planning a long car trip
use a highlight marking pen to chart the route you want to take, without smearing names and numbers underneath.
If you belong to AAA or another motor club,
request maps with route markings and information about construction and other traffic problems.
Write to state tourist offices for specific maps,
scenic route suggestions, and current traffic delay information.
If you are visiting a new city or foreign country,
carry a bus or subway map with you at all times. Mark the map at the place where you are staying, and notice your orientation to that spot at all times.
Practice folding maps for easy reference to specific areas.
Don't wait until you are enroute and have to cope with a mess of papers as you also have to drive the car.
On family trips,
have your spouse, older child, or older adult, to serve as navigator, leaving you free to drive safely.
Before leaving home
make a list of emergency numbers you can phone to get reliable information about routes and locations, in the event you get lost or need specific information.
Review your map
before you leave, and judge distances and driving time so you avoid cities during peak hours
Use loops around major cities
such as, Atlanta, Georgia, Richmond, Virginia, or Washington, D. C. These are designated by three-digit figures starting with an even number.
