Smelly Business

If strong odor gives you a headache, then these jobs are not for you.

These five jobs must be the smelliest ones. If you have weak stomach or sensitive nose, you probably will gag if you have to perform this duty. Thanks to the people who can handle these jobs, we live in a nicer world.

Sewer Workers

If you can’t take foul smell, then this job is not for you. Can you imagine working underground, inside a sewer that has awful smell? Especially in a big city like New York , with all of that residential and tourist population ... I know I wouldn’t be a good candidate!

Garbage Collectors

This is another field that deals with strong smell, especially in the heat of summer. Without these people, our garbage will be piled up, rotten, and horribly stinky! I have seen things that come out of decay trash that gives me a chill down my spine. At least it's good to know the trash may be put to good use, like what GE is doing in Italy.

Plumbers

If you ever have problem with your toilette, you know that this isn’t a job for you. Thankfully, a plumber is only a phone call away. The sight of that mess is enough to throw me over the bridge, not to mention the smell. We often complain that they charged an arm and a leg for their service, but really, would you be able to handle it?

Manure or Compost Pile Handlers

Driving by a farm that has a fresh blanket of manure can just kill your nose. If you need any affirmation, while cruising down Interstate 5 in California, you will likely be attacked by such a stench from a local ranch . Yet, there stands a house nearby, and children play in front. Because of these people, we have food to eat to nurture of body.

Fish Market Workers

Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco has a variety of wonderful foods if you can make it passed the smell of fish. Most of these stands are in open market, but the smell can be overwhelming. Can you believe that there is a fish recycling plant in Warrenton, Oregon? That will not be on my field trip list.

Thank you to the people who work in this smelly business. Without you, the world will be unclean and hungry. You have my deepest appreciation.

I don't know if I could handle those jobs. I have a very sensitive sniffer and it likes pleasant smells.

Good reading here.

This is a good lesson to educate public about these wonderful persons who had their important role being neglected by our society nowadays. Great article! Thanks and take care!

I don't know if I would be turned off by working in a fish market because I don't mind cleaning and fileting fish. The other jobs are ones I definitely would not want to do. Good article.

I wouldn't mind the compost handler one. I have a lovely garden and make and handle my own compost. The smell isn't really that bad to be honest.

Some of these jobs I can handle in small doses but not long term. I must say a big thank you to those workers too!

Like Anne, I make my own compost, and it doesn't smell too bad by the time it's ready to dig into the earth. As for the other jobs, well, I think people who do them are doing the rest of us an enormous service. I don't think I could do them.

Icy, awesome job, and I agree. I get migraines from strong odors, so I would not be a good candidate for these positions. God bless these workers.

Someone has to do those jobs, I wonder if they get used to the odors eventually. There are always nose plugs j/k. Not for me thank you..

*Good job on this article Icy!

Thank goodness there are people who will take these smelly jobs, otherwise we would be in a pickle dish. Best wishes, Ruby
