Six Alternative Attractions in England

Visitors tend to concentrate on London, Bath and better known attractions but there are some amazing alternatives if you know where to find them.

England is the largest of the four countries that make up the United Kingdom. Most visitors make for London, Stratford-on-Avon, and Bath to enjoy the heritage sites in these areas, but there are many more ancient and historical sites to visit. Here are six of the best.

1. Stonehenge in Wiltshire. This is a prehistoric monument which is about 8 miles north of Salisbury. This ancient structure consists of earthworks and a circular formation of giant stones. Archaeologists date this monument from 3100BC to 2100BC. During this period it appears to have been a work in progress. Theories surrounding the original purpose of this giant structure are many and range from giant astronomical observatory to druid temple.

2. Aira Force is a waterfall in the English Lake District. It is just outside Ullswater in Cumbria and was made famous by the poet William Wordsworth. This 20 meter falls is a beautiful sight. Aira Beck (the stream forming the falls) drops down to a pool and then drops again into a second section. A bridge spans the stream just before it drops down, making the climb up very much worth while. The whole place retains it's natural beauty and has a unique atmosphere.

3. Mother Shipton lived over 500 years ago during the reign of King Henry VIII. Her prophecies became famous and some are still coming true today. She is said to have foreseen the first aeroplanes and bombs being dropped from the skies. Her cave, which is said to have been her birth place is close to the famous Petrifying Well. It's waters turn items placed in the flow into stone. This Petrifying Well is England's oldest visitor attraction which first opened in 1630. This attraction can be found close to Knaresborough in the county of Yorkshire.

4. Vindolanda Roman Army Museum is situated on Hadrian's Wall, about 13 miles from Hexham. This is a fascinating Roman Fort and settlement. The museum contains lots of well preserved artifacts and reconstructions, including a full sized Roman Temple.

5. Glastonbury Abbey, Sommerset, is said to be the oldest above ground Christian Church in the world. The ruins of the Abbey attract pilgrims from all over the globe. Legend says that the grave of King Arthur lies here. The holy thorn tree in the grounds flowers twice a year and is said to have sprouted from the staff planted there by Joseph of Aramathea.

6. The White Horse of Uffington which is cut out of the hillside to expose the white chalk beneath is the oldest hill figure in England. It is 374 feet in length and dates back to 1000BC. It is thought to be a representation of the ancient Celtic goddess Belgae. Dragon Hill, where Saint George is said to have killed his dragon in just below this.

You are right Lizzie, too many people go to the same 'old' places which cost a lot more anyway. It's a good idea to experience deeper, more meaningful English culture.

I've spoken to some New Yorkers who think that London is the whole of the U.K. No matter how many times I said I didn't live in London, they asked me, 'Well how's London?'
