One rainy day in November, I found myself with my family in Assisi. We were driving along the narrow roads attempting to find adequate parking, in order to walk and visit the various churches in the area. As we were driving along a particular road, we turned left, trying to head in the right direction. However, after driving a short distance along this new road, we regretfully noticed how impossible it would be to turn around, if need be. There was just enough room for one car to drive through, because both sides of the street were filled with parked cars. After driving some distance, we arrived at the end of the road, which was a dead end. On one side was a high wall, while the other side had a steep staircase going down. In front of us was another steep staircase going straight up, with ramps on either side of the stairs. We were in quite a tight predicament.
So that we would not be stuck there forever, first, we attempted to drive up the stairs on the ramps and turn around at the top. However, since the stairs were very steep, we got stuck at the top and had to cautiously back down-we were back where we started. Next, we attempted to make a 30-point turn without falling down the other set of stairs-that did not work either. For the second time we were back at the beginning. My brother Matthew finally took his turn at the wheel and proceeded to back the car down the entire, narrow street. Since this narrow street was a few miles long, it took quite a while, but this reversal approach worked. We finally made it out and were able to enjoy the rest of our adventurous vacation.
