Darwin is the capital of the Northern Territory on Australia's Northern coast line. It is 3144km from Canberra. It has a population of about 111,300(est. 2005). It takes up 18% of Australia's land which comes to around 122.02km squared.
More then 50 nationalities make up the population of Darwin's 111,300 residents. Traditional land owners and Larakia Aboriginal People are just some of the people that make up the population of Darwin. Its' population is starting to increase as it has strong economics and has a relaxed tropical lifestyle.
Darwin has a tropical climate. Its' dry season goes from May to September. During the dry season it is usually warm and sunny and in the afternoon the humidity averages around 30%. There is usually no rain fall from May to September with usually 1 to 2 days of rain between a 6 month period. In June and July it has its' coolest temperatures with temperatures dropping as low 14 degrees Celsius.
On the 1st July, Darwin and the rest of the Northern Territory celebrate Territory day. This is the only day apart from Chinese New Year where fireworks are permitted. In Darwin the celebrations occur at Mindil Beach where the government put on a major fireworks display.
There is also the Darwin beer-can regatta, which is in August, and celebrates Darwin's love of beer. Contestants' race boats made solely of beer cans. Also in Darwin during the month of August, are the Darwin Cup horse race and Rodeo and Mud Crab Tying Competition.
